Opening kidney grilles M240i

Not sure if my kidney grilles aren’t working, picked the car up last Thursday and haven’t seen these grilles open yet
have gave the car a good run and a good thrashing, but still haven’t seemed to open, have seen plenty on YouTube that seem to open no problem.
Anyone else had this problem

Or is there any other way to get these to open??

After you parked and turned off the car and got out did you hear the fans running?

When I have some fun and then park within a couple minutes the fans ( I read it has to do with cooling the turbo) will stay on and the front vent grills are wide open.

If you don't hear those fans when you get out then I would say that the car hasn't gotten hot enough to need them open, at least for when your parked. The Grilles have 10 different stages of opening so I bet they open to different degrees while driving.

It’s just with seeing the videos on YouTube their grilles seem to open and close no problem, Mines may have opened, but don’t fancy hanging off the bonnet at speed to check.. sorry hood as they say in USA.. I’ve had the car well up to temperature and the grilles are always in the closed position when I get out for a look

I definitely haven’t heard the cooling fans running, I did add the extra cooling pack, it’s maybe something to do with that.

You may have to wait for a really hot day and run slightly in front of the car and look back at it to be sure.

Alternatively, you could find a really reflective storefront window and race towards it and see if you can tell if they're open or closed.

Am definitely to fat to run in front of the car
There’s more chance I would end up in the store if I tried that

Think I will fit a GoPro to the front of car and hope I can see them opening

The thing that I would like to know is what happens, in the unlikely event, something gets stuck between the inlets while it's closing? Does it try to keep going or does it stop or does it reverse itself? What happens if someone breaks? It that a warranty thing or will that fall on us? I can't imagine how expensive that fix will be.

Wish the grilles could stay open all the time... think it looks weird with them closed.

Isn't there a way to disconnect it in it's open state?

This may be similar to keeping the exhaust flaps open. Could potentially code them to stay open or disconnect as you mentioned.

These grills stay closed to get into the ECU into closed loop faster and to get the engine to normal operating temp faster for emissions and fuel economy.

The grills will open when the ECU determines cooling is needed. I had an issue with mine on my G29. The solenoid failed and the computer registered an error in the cooling system and directed immediate attention. I took it by the dealer and they replaced it under warranty. They also said this was a common failure point. The fix took 15 minutes but this nuisance will last longer. I can say I haven't had that same problem pop up in the past 6 months though, but summer is a coming.

I have heard that if it is placed in sports plus, the grill opens when parked.
That is how some YouTube video's show the open grill. I get my M240i in 8 days, but give that a try and let us know if that works please.

I will give that a try when I get home from work tonight

Enjoy your new car when it arrives.

Thanks to everyone that replied,
My Mrs had the car today and when she arrived home after work I went and checked the grilles and woohoo they were open

I take it she was thrashing the t*ts off it as when she arrived home the fans had kicked in..

Also she said she was only in the comfort setting. So am a happy chappy now

Active cooling vanes in grill

This is easy. Park the car on a hot day and sit in place reading for about 15 minutes or till the engine temp hits about 255. Now walk round front and the vanes should be open to the radiator

According to the post above, the OP discovered that over 2 years ago.

Just turn your AC to max and they'll open up for you right away.

This is what I would recommend. Let the car warm up and park it with the A/C running. I doubt it would take long for them to open
