How do I use the lap timer? Should I just use track addict with my phone instead?

Should I just use track addict with my phone instead? Basically the title. Taking my g87 to the track in two weeks and noticed that it had a lap timer built in. How do I set it up? Is it any better than just using a phone mount with track addict?
