Radio remaining on after exiting the car

So this is my first BMW and I gather from reading the various forums that this is a common feature with all BMWs?

When I open the door the radio and dash come alive. Then when I close the door, it remains on. I haven't timed it yet but it was on last night for at least an hour before I realized it.

This is not a problem in normal everyday driving because I always lock it when I exit but it is a right PITA when it is in my garage. I don't lock it in my own garage and I really don't want to.

I looked through the options on the menus and don't see anything for this at all and I read some other forums where it isn't configurable - is this true? Do I have to buy a Bimmercode to turn this feature off?

Mine is a '24MY with ID8 (I think it is ID8).

Thanks.

When entering the car, radio and dash come alive. Correct. It will stay on until the battery management says no. It’s not usually as long as an hour though, may be 15/20 minutes.

When exiting the car, the radio should switch off when you open the door.
I can’t remember if this is an idrive setting though. In previous BMWs it was a hate of mine that the radio stayed on until you shut the door rather than opened it.

Mine is staying on after I close the door when I don't lock it. I wouldn't mind it remaining on for a few minutes but I am sure it was on at least an hour last night.

I just took it home yesterday and I will play with it tonight to see if it eventually shuts off.

Seems like there should be a setting to set whether it stays on and/or how long it remains on after the last door is closed.

The other option I have is to set it so that it locks/unlocks whenever the fob is in close proximity but this is still a pita when the car is in the garage and you are in and out of the garage. Had that with other cars and disabled it.

Just checked. Go to the doors and windows app, it’s on option in the “lock” settings to switch off the system on opening the door.

Thanks.

Mine was set to green (On I think) so I switched it to the other setting - greyed out.

It still stays on, but now it only stays on for about 10 minutes.

Very annoying that BMW chooses this to stay on like this - I've owned a lot of cars over the years and never has one of them kept the radio and dash on for 10 minutes after opening and closing a door. I guess I will just have to get used to it.

Something isn’t right there.
When green, it should switch off when you power down (press the engine start stop button) and open the door to exit the vehicle.

If you get in the car and the engine isn’t running, battery management will dictate how long the system is on.

It definitely is not doing that - no matter what that switch is set to.

I may get the dealer to look at it; However, this may mean an overnight stay at my dealer so I won't get this done for a number of months.

If my seat starts going crazy next I will know that Christine is no longer a Plymouth.

This is, by far, the most annoying thing in this car. Like, you go out and grab something quickly out of your car and shut the door, and suddenly the radio and everything comes on and mine also stays on for an indeterminate amount of time. I live in a condo, and try to be respectful of noise foey neighbors. So I always have to go back into the car and manually turn off the entertainment system. Drives me nuts.

How do we disable this shit?

I have the same problem on my 2022 M240. I turn the radio off when I leave the car. It runs for a long time and I have gone through the settings and can’t seem to change it. I have had a lot of BMWs, and this is a new annoying feature.

In my last BMW, you could pull the interior door handle twice (rather than once) and it would shut everything down when you exit. It became a habit and I still do it with this car.

My sound system stops when I get out of the car. Not sure if it’s the double pull or I changed some other setting or coded it…I can remember. Give that a try and see if it works.

I know there's an option that tells the system to turn off after you exit. But don't think it works if you open the door again and close it. Have to test.

The car unlocks when you switch off the engine so you don’t need the double pull of the door handle. The radio will switch off when you open the door if you have set it to do so in the idrive.

Each time you open the door, the idrive will start up in anticipation of you driving the car. I.e. the radio will also start.
Annoying - it should only start when you start the engine or press the volume button.

In most cars and suvs that I have owned lately (20 years or so), the dash will "come alive" when you open the drivers door. The radio would only come on when the engine was started. I have never owned a vehicle where the dash would "come alive" when I opened a passenger door like my '24 M240i does.

I understand the need for the NAV to spool up immediately upon opening the drivers door but it is very strange for the entire car (radio included) to come alive, and stay "alive" for 10 mins, when someone opens the passenger door.

This is only an issue for me when my car is in my garage: I keep it locked just about everywhere else. No major "biggie". Just a small annoyance.

I find it super annoying tbh, like I cringe if I forget something in my car because then I have to hold down the power button.. I just don't want the system to end up 'damaged' by it constantly going on/off. Irritating.

If anyone knows a work around, PLEASE let me know..

If you open and close the door without locking it behind you, the entire dash stays on for exactly 3 minutes. The ambient LED lights stay on an additional exactly 3 minutes. After those turn off, I got too impatient to see how much longer until the hazard button light and engine start LED turns off.

To have everything turn off right away, simply hit the lock button on your key fob. Voila.

The radio and dash stay on in my car much longer than 3 minutes - more like 10-15 minutes.

Your solution to turn everything off by pressing the lock button on the key fob is sort of like telling someone that they need to remove the rear view mirror if someone doesn't like getting blinded by headlights from someone behind them who has their high beams on.

Guess I’m lucky I got the faster one.

What I have in mind for a scenario that seems more equivalent would be: turn everything off by pressing the lock button on your key fob; sort of like how you turn the tv off by pressing a button on the remote as you walk away.

But maybe you should just keep a small tool kit in the car and simply remove the iDrive cluster from your dash before exiting the vehicle. This will provide the greatest assurance that it is entirely off and it’s really not any more work than simply pressing a button anyway, apparently.

Does locking the car shuts it off. Mine goes off when I open the door to leave, or if I opened it multiple times/opened without exit I’ll just lock the car so the mirrors fold and entertainment shuts off
