Clutch Chatter

Hey gang, was wondering if anyone had noticed the presence of clutch chatter upon initial startup when the fluids are still relatively cold.

My car (3.5K KM) has been noticeably more noisy recently at idle, it seems to be clutch chatter from what I can tell.

Additionally, when creeping forward up a driveway in 1st going super low speeds ( like 1-3 KM per Hour) I hear additional chatter when creeping forward with the clutch partially depressed (to keep from stalling when moving up said driveway).

Any ideas would be great to hear! I'm assuming with the DMF and how much torque the G8X clutch holds this might just be normal.

At cold start my M2 is noisy but no more so than any other similar (6-cylinder) car.

While noisy I hear nothing that triggers any concerns.

As for clutch chatter...

So far have not detected this with my M2 but with another car once warmed up when I pulled up to a stop light and had shifted the transmission into neutral and released the clutch I heard some kind of faint rattle sound with the engine idling. I depressed then released the clutch and the noise was gone. But I could get it to return by revving the engine a bit and when it returned to normal hot idle speed the rattle was back.


The clutch disc was making a bit of noise on the input shaft due to a bit of rough engine idle. Rough in this case was not rough enough to really make itself known except by causing the clutch disc to rattle.

Realizing the source of the noise and with it not getting any worse nor no other symptoms appearing after a while I just ignored the noise.

Of course there's a difference. The rattle noise I heard was with the engine/drive train up to temperature. You report hearing the noise after cold start and idle or when creeping the car with I assume the engine/drivetrain cold.

No clutch chatter. This even though I creep my car when backing into the garage. With the engine at idle (but up to temperature) I let the clutch out -- but not fully engaged (I'm slipping the clutch...) -- and ease the car into the garage. No extra throttle. The clutch engagement is while not fully engaged still is smooth.

You can call up the sport display and observe torque and HP numbers. I think you'll find the amount of torque and HP required of the engine to do what you are doing is quite low. I don't think (a healthy) DMF would be reacting to those low torque/HP numbers.

But of course I can't know the severity of the symptoms you experience. I can't say the noise is normal, the behavior is normal. So my usual advice is to have the car in and let a tech experience the noise/chatter behavior.

Mine chatters, clunks quite a bit when cold... I think it's normal, especially for the power it has to hold

Thanks gents, debating or not to take it in to BMW. They charge a diag fee, so wanted to see if this was normal or they would pretty much eat my $200 lol.

I guess ill go in a longer drive to see if once warm everything smooths out. But ya during first start-up, all movements that operate within 1-3KM are rough and pretty noisy.

My biggest thing that causes the most noise and vibrations is when I slip my clutch going up my driveway and into my garage, need to be very slow as its pretty right on my side. So when I slip the clutch to achieve a 2KM Per hour speed at the engagement point it shakes (as expected as I'm lugging the engine in some instances). But with the clutch pressed in more it does smooth things out.

I'm guessing you are lugging the engine a bit if at very low revs. Mine will noticeably rattle if too little throttle; a bit more throttle and it smooths out.

This is the only time I can get noise out of my MT. I likewise reverse up my driveway to park and sometimes don't get the revs just right. Always a dance in this mode between rattling and excessive revs with more sliip.

Figure as much, my garage is pretty narrow so I have to be cautious going in at the risk of my side mirrors. I slowly creep in avoid the pillars to the right and left of me pretty much. Can't really apply much if any throttle to guide the car into its spot.

Ugh, wish I had a better way to get into thr garage. Long term wonder how bad the lugging is, especially since it's up a mild slope.

You can try folding the mirrors as you get in and out of the garage. It will increase the clearence you have a bit.

Already do that hahaha. I have about 3 inches or so each side with mirrors folded down going in. The garage splits the parking spaces, super annoying for wider cars.
