The roads weren't the best, and part of it was even on a highway, but sitting in the back seat, in "Road" mode (not sure how those were mapped) on the M2 was super bumpy. (We won't even talk about "sport mode" which made it feel like my fillings would pop loose) I mean similar to one of my former cars built for track use.

Unfortunately the dealership is about an hour and a half away or I'd go take a look myself, but can someone tell me if my experience is "about right" ?

Or is it possible that maybe someone mapped a more aggressive damper setting to the "road" driving setting? (is that even possible?)

I was just surprised how compliant the M4 was and how painful the M2 was. Any help is appreciated.
I don't think the G87 is harsh at all. I would check the suspension to make sure that the shipping blocks that the car came with have been removed, believe it or not, a lot of the time the dealer forgets to remove the blocks and the car becomes completely unbalanced, which sounds exactly as what you described. If you and your wife prefer the ride in the M4 then by all means, get that car, however in my experience, I haven't noticed a huge difference other than the size of the 4 being bigger while driving.

Just to put a bow on this... the dealership found the problem. The M2 that we drove still had the transportation blocks in the suspension LOL. So we were essentially driving on a solid suspension.

What a relief!

It’s amazing how often there are reports of this. These dealers are idiotic for leaving the transport blocks installed. That has to be a PDI checkbox.

The M4, being a larger model, often has a more balanced suspension setup, which might explain why it felt more compliant and comfortable. As for the damper settings, it's unlikely that they would vary between different driving modes like ""road"" mode unless there's been some specific tuning or adjustment. It's good to hear from the F87 forum that the G87 might indeed have stiffer shocks compared to the G82, which could explain your experience.
He confirmed that the G87 still had the transport blocks in.
