Hardwire Radar Detector
Hello, I want to hardwire my Uniden R7 through a mirror tap and can't find a guide for the G87. I know there are guides for other G chassis cars but there are small variations and people have been running into issues where one method may not work on another car (Radar detector won't turn off even after 15+ minutes of the car being locked, causing battery drain and an annoying popup on the dash every time you enter the car).
Has anyone here hardwired their dash cam and know which cable on the mirror (black plug and red plug) to put the taps into? All help is appreciated. Thanks!

Update: Hardwired my radar in last week but forgot to update the post. I tapped into the front black plug (you don't need to remove it) and the radar turns on with the car and turns off after a couple of minutes after locking it.

Here are some pictures
You don’t need to remove the black plug to put the taps in, I almost broke my clip trying to do that (circled broken part in red)

I did the same with mine. Thanks for sharing.
Here is YouTube video. The wiring is the same as the M2. |

Sorry the pictures were confusing, the photo with the red circle is before the tap, and the two pictures are after. Basically, tap the red wire into the far right port with the red/blue cable and the black/brown wire into the far left port with the black/brown wire

I am asking because I also wanted to tap my R7. I spoke to a local shop that hard wires radars all the time, and he said tapping the mirror is a "terrible idea" because the radar wont receive it's full power. He said he runs a wire through the interior trim and down to the main fuse box. If you are able to find out if your R7 is running at 12v and let me know I'd really appreciate it. |

OBD power for radar
I found a much simpler solution to power my Valentine radar.
An OBD adaptor: https://www.stickerfab.com/products/...EaAu-hEALw_wcB Powers on and off with ignition. |

Just did this tonight in my M2, easier once you have seen how things go together. I used an Amazon wire tap and a Blendmount for my V1 as I have in my other cars, works great: https://billswebspace.com//bmwm2.html#M2V1

For a number of years I had an OBD2 trip/data logger in my cars so I couldn't use the OBD2 socket to power things like my V1. I used something like this: https://www.autozone.com/12v-product...E&gclsrc=aw.ds With the Y cord used one socket to power my V1 and the 2nd to power a hand held CB radio. For a portable NAV unit I used a 2nd power socket in the car. By not hard wiring anything to the car I was able to move these items between my 2 cars when for instance I was going on a road trip. (Most recently when I decided to leave the M2 in the garage but take the V1 out to install into my 230xi prior to a road trip to KC MO (round trip just over 500 miles) to take care of some family business.) Now with NAV standard equipment in my cars and no hand held CB radio there is just my V1. But because I have two cars still not hardwired. While the V1 goes dark when I turn off the engine and get out of the car and lock the car I'm still a bit uncomfortable leaving the V1 on so I turn the V1 off using the on/off/volume knob. |

Does anyone have a recommendation for fuses on front right fuse box to add a circuit for both a dashcam and radar detector? When you put your VIN in the BMW guide, this is the fuse diagram it spit out for my car. Right side of pic is the passenger side fuse box. Thats where I’d like to go.

After several unsuccessful attempts at inserting the mirror taps with the mirror mounted, I grabbed the mirror at the bottom, somewhat forcefully twisted the whole assembly to the right & down, and the mirror released from its windshield mount. This made it super easy to insert the red tap to red and black tap to brown/yellow as shown above.
To remount mirror to windshield, I started with pressing the bottom of the mirror to the windshield mount & it popped back on - power will stay on for a few minutes after exiting vehicle. |

Couldn't you just lift the plug out and insert the taps? I did that today for a cam, the only reason I removed the plug was to get a better angle for the taps + to get some zip-ties in place to relieve possible strain.
