I am surprised your WeatherTech did not fit properly. It is way better than the factory mat. My only complaint is that the cubby behind the retaining net is not protected. Outside of that it fits about perfect. It took a day for it to find its shape after being rolled up in the delivery box and has been good since then.

Just genuinely curious, what do you guys put in the trunk to justify these heavy rubber chunks?

My trunk Tuxmat is great. What didn’t you like about it?

TBH, they are not that heavy.
You’d be surprised at the difference in condition between a boot floor that’s had one of these on it and one that hasn’t after a year or two.
For example, bags seem to “scratch” and wear the floor over time.

Just keeps the base floor looking brand new.

I also have a tarpaulin cut roughly to shape that that can fold out to cover the rear seat backs that I put on top if I’m carrying something dirty like my bike.

I suppose. I guess I see it like those old front end bras in the 80s and 90s. I’d rather see my slightly worn carpet than look at that trunk condom for my entire ownership new carpet is $136 at bmw northwest if worried about the next owner.

I wish the car had a few anchor points in the trunk though. Where you could possibly put in a net/partition or just temporarily bungee down a milk crate for trips to the grocery store. There’s always a few heavier items that want to go all over the place since I don’t fill but maybe 1/3 the space usually.

Mine has floor fixed loops for that as standard

Yes they are SO heavy. A few pounds is just too much. I felt my 0-60 get slower after install.

Muddy shoes from hiking. My kids somehow always muddy shoes even when it hasn’t rained in weeks. I also have a small farm at a second location from my home, and help at other farms, so farm boots are often in my trunk and those things can get gross.

It’s to keep the trunk area clean. So much easier to clean mud or whatever off a rubber mat than have it get embedded in carpet fibers.

With your line of thinking what are the point of floor mats? You can just clean the carpet. Did you remove the floor mats from your car?

I didn’t put 1/8” rubber plating over them.. That’s a surface that I put dirty shoes, hence why it came with floor mats. Unlike my trunk. 16,000 miles and the trunk carpet is beautiful. 🤷‍♂️ Whenever something wet/messy has to go in a car of mine, I just bag it so there’s nothing to clean. Your reply is fine, that’s why I asked. I live on a farm, but I have an old truck for when things have to be dirty.

I was thinking a little higher up but you’re right there is probably a good way to utilize them for what I had I mind.

It fit worse than the WeatherTech, I went ahead and re-bought the WeatherTech because it was the best of the worst - and it's already starting to warp w/o even using the trunk..

Interesting. Personally I prefer the Tuxmat material over the harder Weather Tech. I’ve been rough on the Tuxmat putting /forcimg my wheeled hockey bag in there a pile of times, and it still looks brand new.

The Weather Texh I had in my GTI hatch for many years never really formed back to shape properly along the outer lip. And it did show wear a little over time.

Doesn’t sound like you use the trunk much anyway…

Looks like they sent you the wrong liner. Here is what I ordered.

Holy moly, you have been through the ringer with the trunk mats

I'm looking at either the 3D or the tuxmat.

Which one is better? I prefer a rubber texture vs plastic

I had the very same question. No judgement, just pure curiosity. 👀

Honestly, I just hate vacuuming the carpet in the trunk. All-weather liner takes no time to pop out and wash quickly. Much less maintenance overall and I like the look.

This is the only car in our household so it does everything. Most common is golf gear that can be wet, muddy, covered in grass clippings etc and much easier to take out a mat and hose it down than vacuum that interior and have all the small crap fall in to the battery compartment.

I had several bags of topsoil and sand in there the other week, put the crappy bmw one on top of the other one

The 3D one isn’t rubber—it’s pretty light weight actually, and it fits SO well. It’s just a lot easier to clean up mud and general dirt, as there’s no carpet pile for it to get stuck in.

First one I’ve ever had in any car, and I’m totally sold. Prefer actual carpet mats in the car itself, however.
