Contemplating Selling G80 X-Drive for G87 M2 Manual
Hey all, I am thinking about selling my G80 M3 for a G87 and wanted to know your guys thoughts on it. The G80 is very dull and doesn’t feel as engaging compared to driving a manual. Is the G87 manual any good and how does it stack up against the m3 in driving dynamics?

anecdotally some folks here say that you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between a G80 manual and G87 manual. I found the biggest difference to be seating position personally.

Why did you get the G80 in the first place? Do you need the 4 doors? Do you need 4 or in emergencies, 5 seats? Do you need AWD? If you say no to those, then check out a G87 for sure. However if you need the 4 doors and 4 seats, why not look at a manual G80 instead? They are both great cars. I prefer the G87 simply because I don't need the space (I have a GTI if I need to carry people). I also like the size of the G87 (you can reach the passenger side door handle from the driver's seat, this is just about the right size for me).

I've driven several G80 competitons. Fast as "hell"!
But definitely not as nimble as the G87. The shorter wheelbase makes a difference. And - - for me - - the 6MT makes it so much more engaging. Just make sure to order the MP HAS and have it port installed! |

For me, the MT is the way to go. Much better experience even if the MT isn't the best in the bimmer.

I just did the 1 day M school at Thermal which was 5 straight hours of autocross in M2s and track/skidpad in M3/M4s, all auto rwd. I also owned a manual g80 for 2 years for reference. I came away impressed with the M2’s nimbleness in the tight courses, especially willingness to rotate on corner entry. Of course, it couldn’t hold a candle to the bigger brothers in terms of acceleration and track pace.

Get the manual g87. You won’t regret it. I got mine with the MP HAS. Car sits lower, lot more nimble without compromising ride comfort.

According to this graph from Bluespark, there’s a pretty big difference at the top end between 5-7k where I mostly was. Also it wasn’t completely apples to apples as most of the acceleration in the M2 was coming out of low speed corners while the M3 was on a much bigger track. M3 felt it was getting power down better. They mandated DSC mode there could be differences in programming as well. Tires were the same on all cars, Continental ECS02 (340tw I believe) which is comparable to PS4S. Ambient temps were 95-113F and tire pressures were getting above 40 psi so not ideal conditions by any means. |
