Fuel warning at 20% remaining

Hi all, just had my 2024 M2 go into a sort of limp mode due to low fuel. I was turning right at an intersection from a stop, and all of a sudden the throttle response went to crap and the car slowed down, and I saw a fuel warning saying "Full engine power not available, please refuel". But I was at 20 percent fuel remaining, and driving very slowly (car not warm, still in break in too).

Luckily I hadn't pulled out in a tight gap, it was quite a jarring loss of power. Gas station was right there, chucked in a couple gallons and warning disappeared.

I have searched this and only found reports of people getting this falsely on track, presumably due to fuel sloshing around. But has anyone else seen this during normal in-town driving? Going to talk to the dealer too of course. I could see this being dangerous if I was counting on the power to pull out in traffic.

So in addition to a tiny gas tank, we’re only able to use 75% of it? LOL

I got a message one time saying power limited or reduced due to low fuel but it was still safe to drive. I’ve never gotten it again though.. maybe I’ve been better about keeping it at least 30%+ full though.

Does the G87 have a gas light? Are we not allowed to use the car until the gas light comes on, then find our nearest gas station, like every other car?

I have taken it down to 15 miles with no power issues (just warning into fuel reserve).

When I filled it up, it took 12.8 gallons (tank is a 13.7 gal tank).

You can set the mileage at which the light & alert come on. It's likely the OP wasn't at 20% fuel remaining as that would be almost 3 gallons. Even if he were getting 15 mpg, he'd still have ~45 mi to go & the reduced power would't kick in.

I got the reduced power alert in my wife's X3MC when it was down to 17 mi on the range remaining display which would be about 1 gallon of fuel remaining.

With the range at 35km I got the reduced power warning, it needed just under 48 litres to fill the tank, so about 4 litres remaining.

I did manage to drive 630km (391 miles) on the tank to that point though, for a fuel consumption of 7.54 l/100km (31.2 US mpg / 37.5 mpg)

Definitely at 20% according to the app, I checked before filling, and gauge showed plenty as well. I put 4 gallons in and I'm at 48 percent, and that math checks out. Will verify numbers are current at next fill-up, I didn't want to fill up at that crappy station (only been using Shell V-Power 93 so far)

My average efficiency in August is 23mpg, can't imagine it was spooked about range.

I'm going to run it low again and see if I can reproduce, I should have taken a picture of the warning next to my fuel gauge and MyBMW app to show the dealership.

How do you change the setting for the warning? Mine turns on above 1/4 of a tank which my car says is about 50 miles remaining and I would love to lower it to 10 or 20 miles instead. I did a quick search through the manual but i didnt notice it anywhere

think people are mixing up the two alerts, first is the low fuel alert which for me goes off at 50 miles of range remaining. second is the reduced power alert which again for me goes off around 10 miles of range left.

Ah, I have never got that low so I didn't know there was a second one.

So is there a way to change the low fuel alert? I think that the alert going off at 1/4 of a tank is a bit too high for me

My initial warning is at 50 miles left. Another pops at 30. But the power cut doesn't happen until about 12 miles left. When that was identified just made sure to refill by 2nd warning at the latest going forward.

Agreed and I’ve been through the menus numerous times, up and down, side to side, selected every possibility, and yet to see any adjustments on either.

I’d make some changes on the mileage/power alerts if someone points me in the proper location.

I've only had reduced power when I was near single digit miles remaining. Not sure the exact number it started at, but it wasn't 20%.

Same. I have been at well below 20% multiple times without receiving that warning. It wasn’t until I was on near fumes based on the read out that I got the notice of change in power.

i think you need bimmercode to change. from what i understand there is no factory settings that can be adjusted. i am sure the lawyers prevented that...

I get the one at 50, and then at 30 a "hey, dumbest, you are running low" but as I haven't gone lower than 15 miles, no limp mode.

i had an incident iin my E85 Z4 going up a slope when my gas was getting low (no warning light yet) and the power started cutting out. i found out the gas tank reservoir was "U/saddle shaped" and the fuel may have gotten too low on one side when the car was up slope.

Found out the Supra had the same gas tank - and read about fuel starvation incidents on track when the fuel was getting low. i made it a rule to keep the tank at least 25% full (approx 12 L).

I noticed the M2 has a similar gas tank to the supra. I also find the fuel indicator on the M2 iffy, so i monitor fuel via Bimmerlink.

That said, experiencing that fuel cut out from making a right turn seems a little much. Again, i don't quite trust the fuel percentage.

It's possible I saw the ability to change the alerts in Bimmercode.

Yeah, most likely.
I’m anal with new cars, actually and any piece of technology-phones, tablets, televisions, etc.
I push every button, select every option, change all the settings basically to learn and secondarily to see if I can escape the mistakes without crying “uncle”.
I’m not a bimmercoder so I can’t fu** that up to any extent.
