When I was in Nürnberg in the mid-80's, there was a boat on the canal that was a nightclub below deck and a restaurant up top. It was pretty much a "Germans Only" place, but my buddy and I both spoke German fairly well, so we figured we'd slide on in and see how we fared. I was the designated driver that night, so I was going to limit myself to 2 beers. I ordered a Pilsner and it came in a brandy snifter sized glass. First one went down fine. Halfway through the second one I started to feel really blasted. I couldn't understand why. I told my buddy we had to leave and he needed to drive. I don't remember another thing.

That was a Thursday night and I needed to turn in some paperwork for a class I had taught that week on Friday morning. I woke up late to a screaming headache and nausea. I literally slithered out of bed and crawled to the toilet where I got caught up in a vicious round of barfing that made my head hurt worse, which in turn made the nausea worse, etc.

I called my (at the time) wife at her office to ask why she didn't wake me up before she went to work. She yelled, "F**k you!" into the phone and hung up. I was stunned. I had no idea what I had done to deserve that, but it must have been bad. I finally managed to get to the office to turn in the paperwork. Not sure how. When my wife came home later she was still royally pissed. Apparently when we got home the previous night, she was sleeping and I was loud and very obnoxious and ate the sandwich she had made for her lunch the next day. I explained to her that I should not have been drunk and the only thing I could think of was that someone slipped something into my drink because I was American and dared to crash a Germans Only bar.

My head was in agony the rest of that day and night. On Saturday it had subsided to a simple nasty hangover. On Sunday I was still feeling awful, but I finally managed to eat and keep it down. Finally on Monday I was mostly back to normal. I can only think that some asshole slipped a hit of acid or something like that into my second glass of beer when I wasn't looking.

Definitely sounds like someone slipped you a mickey.

When I was based at Francois Kaserne in Hanau, Germany, 1968, some of
the bars across the street on Lamboy Strasse had turf problems. It wasn’t
so much the Germans, but rival Army dudes from different batteries and
bases, plus some white or black only establishments. Knives were pulled
plus at least one shooting. It got pretty nasty at times. I avoided civilan
bars and stuck with the EM club on base.

It seemed, though, that we would practically drink ourselves into oblivion each evening. A couple of days in, I remarked that the hangovers were getting a bit old and my companion suggested I switch to drinking Scotch whiskey. I did so and the hangovers were indeed not as bad.

But one night we stayed out basically all-night drinking and by the time we returned to our hotel I was very, very drunk. I basically passed out on my bed and then in the middle of the night awoke to a severe earthquake. In my still drunken state, I thought to move under a doorway or something and then realized that the "earthquake" was all between my ears. I fell back into bed and to sleep. I suppose the next morning I was hung over on Scotch.
When I was in Okinawa, April 72-73 as a 824th combat support gp. detached independent medic on Ie Shima, everyone wanted to go to Naha for the BX stereo goods. Hauling it back then onto the ferry was a chore..
