Immobilise M2

Off on holiday soon, the M2 is going to be left on my driveway for a week. I’m taking both keys with me but what I’d like to know is, is there a simple relay/fuse pull that will make it impossible to start? I was thinking maybe the fuel pump relay…?

Rent or buy an automotive boot. The car will still start but………….

I recall seeing them on Amazon.

The fuel pump would be good.

But to be honest, if someone wants it, they are coming with a flat bed.

Agreed. Not something I'd worry about, that's why you have insurance (presumably). It's just a car, can always get another.

If new cars were stacked on lots, that’d be one thing but if your car gets swiped, you’re truly F ed, back of the line.

Obviously depends on location. I've got 14 new & used G87s within 50 mi of me. Every dealership (all brands) in my area has a full lot.

Thieves would need to have hijacked one of your key RFIDs to start the car without one of the two keys.

As Techwhiz1 correctly points out a flat bed/wheel lift tow truck can have the car loaded/lifted and gone in under 60 seconds.

A wheel lock doesn't help. The operator slips a nylon/plastic shoe under the locked wheel and it slides on this as it is pulled onto the flat bed.

The lift truck operator can have a wheel dolly under the "immobile" end of the car in no time.

If a secure garage is not available, then retractable bollards are the next best solution: https://bollardpros.ca/

It's unfortunate, but it's true. If a professional wants your car, they can get it.

Comfort yourself with this: the odds are relatively low. BMWs don't get stolen a lot. If you were asking this on a Hyundai forum, then you'd REAALY be F'ed.

I joke that the best anti-thief feature on my M2 is the manual transmission. It won't stop pros, but it will stop the casual joyriders.

That may be the case in North America, but elsewhere in the world, not so much so.

Kinda? I mean, MTs are vanishing everywhere, and for example only the US market is keeping the MTs alive right now. At least, that was my understanding watching the take up rates for the M2.

In all seriousness, is there any place where MTs are actually still popular?

Most of the vehicles on the road in Europe are still manuals, even though new cars are more likely than ever to be EVs or automatics.

In the UK most new drivers still learn on a manual transmission car, because if they pass their test on an automatic, their licence explicitly prevents them from driving a manual transmission car. In 2022 only 1.1 million of 41 million (less than 3%) driving licence holders in the UK had automatic-only licences: https://www.driving.org/new-drivers-...ence%20holders.

There was a story of a guy with a Porsche 911 variant on the other side of a 10 foot high wall from the road.

They used a crane with a boom and lowered the car on a carrier.

If they want it............
