Do we know how long BMW plans on having a manual option in the G87?

The number of manual car options on the new market these days is getting lower and lower. Seems like every manufacturer is slowly parting ways with it. It’s be crazy for us to assume that it’ll be any different for BMW. The questions is how long do I have?

Has there been anything announced or even talked about in terms of when and if BMW will ever discontinue offering a manual for the g87?

If no, what do you predict? Based on what you know about the current state of the company.

Officially, the G87 will be the last M car with a MT, so when the run ends around 2030, that's it. That's the end, at best.

BUT, unofficially, it could be sooner. Maybe as soon as 2 years from now. No one knows for sure.

FWIW, ZF matters too, since they supply the transmissions. If ZF decides to discontinue the MT (or raise the price too much), BMW may be forced to stop offering manuals.

im following this too, and so far theres conflicting info on it. some reputable sources say manual will be offered concurrently with xdrive like current M3, some sources say xdrive and auto will be only configuration after it goes live.

basically, get em while they are hot. nothing is guaranteed.

Keep in mind 50% of G87s in the US are MT. The US is the 2nd largest market for BMW. That will play a huge roll in the decision.

To put the numbers in perspective, that is only about 3,000 cars out of total BMW annual production of over 2 million vehicles. Strategically it may not make sense to keep that small market, depending on the overall sales profile of the M2 and cost of supporting a specific configuration and parts supply that may not be at a viable level.

There are only 6k M2s sold a year in the US? Hopefully the M3, M4 take rate will help support this. Either way I got mine!! That is one of the reaspon I got one when I did.

Everyone was shitting their pants over rumors that the G80/82 would drop the MT when LCI came out. Well, the LCIs are out and the MT is still available for them. I can foresee BMW not offering MT when the xDrive model comes out in some markets but not for NA.

That said nobody knows for sure this far out. We’re talking about something that’s at least 2~3 years away.

I’d be very surprised if BMW drops the manual in the G87 at any point in its run. It’s already approved, the take rate is high, and it’s a differentiator for BMW.

Also, I’ll add that the big EV push maybe wasn’t as rosy as manufacturers thought and I wouldn’t be surprised if they start backing off the big EV push. Hopefully, BMW is one of those and continues to offer ICE M options with, hopefully, a manual option.

I don’t think any enthusiasts actually cares, but some manufacturers are actually working on and going to offer a manual EV!

So stupid. Completely fake.

This is like when Subaru adds fake “shifts” to their CVTs in their Ascent.
Completely fake nonsense, and it actually wrecks the experience of the drive and reliability of the transmission by doing so.

I totally agree, but at least they’re trying to innovate. Maybe something worthwhile will come out of it?

Or they can just make a manual EV or manual plug in hybrid like manufacturers have in the past instead of designing a fake shifting experience.
