AutoID Splitter | DON'T BUY IT.
Don't buy the AutoID front splitter. It's cheap, flimsy plastic that will break. I received a defective one and only found out at the final stage of professional installation. The winglet was the wrong size, melted, and sat near flush with the bumper. While driving far from home, I heard scraping and realized the splitter was destroyed, dragging and held on by screws. Thanks to some local kids in an M4, I barely made it home. This junk costs a few hundred bucks and is held by pathetic 10mm screws. Avoid AutoID's plastic junk.

I bought the wingless one recently and other than a small chip in the front (which to be fair I didn't check before install) it's been fine and looks great.

It's on me for not inspecting it, of course it was the last piece I went to put on. Now I have to wait until August for them to send me another one as it's on backorder. Lmao..

Agree, its plain junk. I have similar experience.
Similar story with the basic CF version. https://g87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...8#post30493078 |

So, I'm not gonna disagree with the quality of the splitter being what it is. That said, at least for myself, I knew that this is a cheaper and by extension easily replaceable option compared to most others, save for the AliExpress or Temu special. I got mine specifically because I expected it to take the damage and brake off easily, preventing worse damage to my bumper since most of the roads I drive on are horrible, along with most drive ways to parking spaces near me seeming to have angles only meant for my 4Runner. I bought 2 of them when they were on sale last year for less than the price of a much better quality one and have performed as I intended (currently on my second one), with one breaking away after taking the brunt of the impact with tire on the freeway. If you truly wanted quality, you would've forked out the extra cost for something better or at the very least have thoroughly inspected it upon receipt (there's actually one or 2 older posts on which AutoID replaced damaged splitters).

I returned mine and went with the TRE Splitter and Winglets. There was paint run lines, it felt cheap, I sat on it for a week, and I just couldn't put something that sub par on my brand new BMW.

I see products on Alibaba for carbon fiber grille and air intakes at the sides, not not really thinking I want all that carbon. Did you do a carbon fiber spoiler? |

Installing mine today, we'll see how it goes. I ordered the non-CF one to test the waters and see if I will scrape it or break it on something. If it does well in the next 12 months, I may go with the CF next Christmas. If I break it, I'll decide from there.
Once I get in there, I will know better if I need to add more adhesive. It really depends where the screws attach and if the force of the air creates a pivot point such that it wants to tear itself off at speed. Another thing to think about, after the install, heating it with a heat gun is probably a good idea since that will promote adhesion from the tape. Someone already eluded to this, you can either approach it as something durable and impact resistant or as a break away, crush on impact kind of thing to protect other, more expensive parts of the car. I am more in the 1st camp. I'd rather break the lip and have it tear off clean and eat the $250 then be super durable and take part of the bumper with it when struck which turns into a $1000+ repair. I guess we'll see what happens. I am not lowered so I'm optimistic about the odds. |

Got through the install. All in all, it came out great, very happy with the end result. But, I had to make a few adjustment. I took pics of the items to pay attention to.
First, now that I know how this lip installs and looking at the OP pictures, I am confident OP's problem is an installation issue. You can see how the lip separated in the front while it is attached in the back. I'll explain below and it will make more sense once you see the pictures but that can only happen if the installer didn't use fasteners to secure it in the front. Relying on the tape alone is not enough. The loading forces while driving will tear it off for sure so you have to attach it mechanically to make it secure. My guess is the installer used what was provided and didn't apply better judgment to go beyond and do it correctly. See pics below for what I modified to make work really well. This thing isn't going anywhere. Took the OEM lip off, here's what it looks like off: Taking it off exposed several additional holes that are not pre-drilled in the AutoID spoiler. Great place to secure the lip since they're closer to the front and provide additional support. The 5 additional ones that I used: First problem, I need to drill the holes in the lip but aligning the holes with the bumper is tricky. This is where I borrowed a trick from my home improvement projects. I applied a little latex paint on the metal pins where the holes are, aligned the lip, pressed it on, and used the imprint from the paint to show me where to drill. Here's what it looks like afterwards. The one on the left didn't imprint that great but good enough to get the rough idea. Drill the holes, make them a little bigger to give yourself some room for adjustment. It doesn't have to be exact since the washers on the OEM screws are large and will hold it all in place. Clean up the paint with soap and water, and for extra credit de-burr the holes with a utility knife to make it all nice and tidy. And here's the part installed using OEM hardware from the factory lip. The washers are nice and big which makes them perfect for this (maybe BMW is onto something here ) Same idea for the left and right sides. There are 2 additional holes to use that will secure the parts in place and prevent them from falling off. Use the paint trick again. Apply it where the holes are, press the side lip against it to get the pain transfer, drill the holes, clean it up, and you're ready to go. The holes are marked with red arrows. The green arrow shows where there is no hole in the OEM bumper. I drilled a small hole and used the OEM screw to secure it. No big deal, just wanted to mention it. IMPORTANT: DO NOT USE THE SCREW PROVIDED BY AUTOID in the blue arrow location. The screw is too long and will make a visible indent in the lip as it goes in from the bottom. I used a shorter, 0.25" stainless screw instead. It doesn't have to be long, it's just there to bind the side and center pieces together. This is a big miss on AUTOID's part IMO. I can see how an inexperienced installer can mess this up, don't do it. With the extra screws in place, the lip is on very tight and isn't relying on tape to stay on. Honestly, there's no need for tape with this install. I am surprised the lip didn't come with the extra holes already pre-drilled. It's such an obvious place to attach it and makes such a big difference that it's a head scratcher why they didn't use those locations. Maybe not every model comes with the OEM lip and therefore doesn't have those holes? Not sure. Hope this helps DIY'ers do this install right. I'll take some photos of how it looks tomorrow when I have a chance. And yes, the car is filthy underneath, and I took it to a car wash yesterday . It's winter time in New England so salt is everywhere. Last edited by Ziggyrama; 12-27-2024 at 07:30 PM.. |
