Heads up Display problem!

Morning friends,

I was driving yesterday and would you believe it, my HUD dimmed to the point that it was no longer visible. I only knew it was still on because I was able to see it shimmer on turns. Eventually the HUD came back to full brightness. Later on that night, it went out again and came back!

I was hoping it would stay broken so the dealership can troubleshoot easier. I plan to take it in this week. Anyone else come across this issue? I'll make sure and update everyone with what I find out.

I've heard of people experiencing issues during the day due to certain tint they got on their windows. But you mentioned it happened to you at night. Definitely take it in.

Yea, it happened at day time and night. I do not have tinting in my vehicle.

Did you check the settings? This was listed in the owners manual.

Setting the brightness
The brightness is automatically adjusted to the
ambient brightness.
The base setting can be adjusted manually.
1. "CAR"
2. "Settings"
3. "Displays"
4. "Head-up display"
5. "Brightness"
6. Turn the Controller until the desired bright‐
ness is set.
7. Press the Controller.

Yup. Checked all the settings. Even set brightness to max. Moved it up and down, etc. Nada. It eventually came back on at the normal brightness randomly.

Likely unrelated, but I thought I had issues with it one afternoon. Realized I was wearing sunglasses....

Lol

Probably doesn't help you, unless you were also wearing a pair.

Since I got HUD, I've replaced all my driving sunglasses (Serengeti) with non-polarized.

OMG. LOL. I feel like an idiot. Yesterday was the first time I wore sunglasses in the car. I just went to the garage and tried it out. YUP polarized sunglasses will kill your view of the HUD. I tested non-polarized and they work fine. Wow...

Now we know, and knowing is half the battle.

It's is my understanding that because of this there is a "rotation" option within the iDrive HUD settings. If you rotate the display just a bit, it can help with polarized glasses. I haven't had to try this, but it might be an option for some as well.

It's polarizing sunglasses that are the problem since you are looking at light reflected from a non-metallic surface.

Oh, and for fun, look at your PPF with polarizing sunglasses (especially where it goes over a curved surface).
