Engine warm up - myth or fact?

Do you G87 owners warm up the car before driving or just go and drive slowly until it warms up or is none of this even necessary on modern engines?

There is a old thread with this exact discussion if you search for it.

The quicker you get the car going, the quicker the oil heats up and gets to full lubrication temps. Every second the oil is cold, damage is occurring in your engine because the cold temps are outside its lubricity range. Almost all auto manus are stating this now. Drive slow, stay out of boost and heavy load, but don’t let the car idle for 10-20 minutes - that’s old grandpa thinking. In some vehicles, some of the oil circulation is extremely poor at idle, when cold, too.
Been this way for probably 2 decades or more now and IS the recommendation from the auto engineers. Right in all of the manuals.

Hey that was me

OP- as I had the same question here’s my new protocol that has worked like a gem every time after doing my homework on this subject.

This is my second G87 (long story somewhere in another thread) and since day 1 delivery new, I have done this protocol based upon everyone’s feedback and their own opinions, along with my own research.

On cold:

-Start up and wait for RPM’s to drop to idle position (usually around 750)
-Wait another 10 seconds or so and throw it in gear & pull away.
-Carefully make sure to ease into the gas and easy on clutch releases if manual for the first few minutes.
-Keep RPM’s under 4k-ish (your rev limiter will block at 5.5k which is too high on cold anyways you until operating temps are up)
-I keep an eye on actual engine temp to the degree, driving gingerly and only giving gas about 25-35% at most in each gear until around 160 degrees Celsius.
-180+ I drive as normal without redlining
-205+ operating temps after 15 mins of solid driving and you should be fine to open her up.

This may seem like a process, but it’s muscle memory once you get going and just a bit of common sense.

TL;DR-
-Wait for rpm settle and pull away and drive like you’re a patient and relaxed lad for 10 mins.
-15 mins in do what you want.

This is all based in the outside temp being between 50 degrees Celsius and up in SoCal. I can’t speak on behalf of someone in the winters of Chicago and their protocol, which may consist of actually letting the car warm up at idle.

I know from research, too much idle builds up unnecessary engine carbon.

Cheers!

Edit: no matter hot or cold, on start up I always wait for RPM’s to drop to idle before ever pulling away.

Sorry I typed this EARLY. I meant Fahrenheit. I can’t even edit it and pretend like this didn’t happen. I’ll just own it. I’m bad with my temp terms

Yeah, don't you love it when someone quotes the typo so the paper trail is there, no matter what you edit.

One thing I didn't ask is, do you guys start the car on eco, sport or sport plus mode? I like to hear the exhaust so tend to start on sport most times but wonder if it's best to build up to it (eco > sport > sport plus) as the engine warms up?

I always switch mine to my M2 button which is set at sport when I get in the car. Then while waiting for RPM to drop change to sport mode on dash and select music. By then it is usually good to roll out.

The only warm up time I allow is time for the elevated cold start idle RPMs to drop. This is when the engine controller switches from open loop to closed loop mode.

This takes just a few moments. Once underway I keep RPMs <3K and engine loads light until the oil temperature is up to normal operating temperature (~212F).

Doesn't happen now with my M2 garaged and hasn't happened with my M2 but in cases where a car received a coating of snow/ice while parked out in the elements -- hotel parking lot for example -- I'll let the engine idle longer until the windows are clear enough to safely operate the car.

I seldom select any real sport modes but generally if I do I do so when the engine is up to temperature. My experience is at least with some sport modes the throttle is a bit overly sensitive. The car is easier to drive smoother when cold with the default -- no sport mode -- throttle behavior selected.

I put it in gear and go. I’m not going to sit there and annoy my neighbors with my exhaust. When I tune the car eventually I’ll code out the cold start. Obviously drive sensibly until normal operating temps.
