I think the idea is that it would be a lot more costly if anything goes wrong during or after the install. The shop assumes that responsibility, so I would imagine they feel they can charge top dollar for the install.

When I was calling around for estimates, the first thing the shops mentioned was - "oh, that has the electronic suspension". And then the second thing they mentioned - "So it's a 2024 ?" .

After that, all I could hear was cha-ching cash register sounds.

It’s because they think it’s more difficult than it actually is. Places charge by the hour not based on what could go wrong down the road post install. The great thing about coilovers that keep EDC is that you just unplug the sensors from the old struts and plug into new. Done.

If you were getting rid of EDC I could understand shops being a pain about it.

It’s just shops taking advantage of people as usual.

But you can keep telling yourself whatever you want to accept these install costs.

Best yet…learn to wrench on your own car. It’s really not that difficult.

I grew up working on my own vehicles. But I got to the point where laying on my back underneath the car on the garage floor became something I very much didn't look forward to.

And I'm not really sure where anyone is "telling themselves whatever they want to accept these install costs".

I'm telling you specifically what shops tell you in regards to the high install costs. And what their 'reasoning' is for what they charge.

We all can agree that what shops are charging is crazy expensive.

Next time I ask for an install quote I'll let them know this guy on the internet named Rdurty said it's too much. Maybe they will lower the price.

I’m curious what they would charge to install springs. It actually takes LONGER to install springs than coilovers.

Also if you tell them Rdurty said they were too expensive that won’t help you at all. However if you mention Rdurty2 you will get the hookup.

Basically the same prices to install just the springs. My quotes ranged from $900 to $1200.

But that it true about doing a coilover swap - the entire spring/shock gets pulled out, and the aftermarket unit gets put in.

Whereas with a spring swap, the spring/shock has to get removed, then the spring has to get removed etc. etc.

So you would think it would be a bit cheaper for the entire coilover assembly. Good point.

Believe me, when I started getting quotes for the spring install, I was a bit shocked. I was expecting to pay around $600 at the most.

I am banking on this fact for whenever I get to installing these coilovers.

I had the springs installed by a local "motorsport" shop and paid around $1200. Again, I think installing the springs is technically harder than swapping coils due to all the steps involved, but i am basically at the shops mercy where i live.

So do lowering springs kill struts fast on g42s? I am getting into researching lowering springs for my rwd 240 and wondering if I need support mods with the springs like damoers and struts since ur oem one seems to have not lasted

I wound up installing the system with a friend this past weekend. He has experience with coilovers installs, but it took longer than we had planned. If I had to do it again I think we could probably do it in 5-6 hours. Definitely not difficult, but having the right strut knuckle spreader makes a huge difference on the fronts. And the hardest part of the EDC was getting the wires tucked nicely and the provided zip ties lined up.

I can only speak to my experience, but yes, 3 of my 4 struts blew out after installing the lowering springs and both BMW and the independent mechanic believe the additional load was the cause, that and BMW’s move to lower quality OEM struts. I am running the AWD variant, FWIW.

It's not a 100% guarantee - but the G80 / G82 forums are also full of threads about OEM struts blowing out shortly ( 15-20k km ) after installation of spring lowering kits. It does makes sense , as the spring / damper pairs are developed so that at max height , the damper is not under excessive load . When lowering the car , you are basically putting a constant load on the hydraulic system of the damper , and that is excess strain on seals mainly.

Is this the same for this Bilstein kit?

I'm no expert , but i would think that any spring / damper combination that has not been engineered one for each other will cause excess strain on the damper. The dampers mainly have compression and rebound. When putting a lowering spring , you are basically putting the damper in constant state of compression, and any road imperfections are loading it more than it would normally load up with the stock springs.

The best - but most expensive way - to lower your car , is with coilovers , as both the spring and damper work in unison and have been developed toghether.

And another thing you have to consider, if the shop doing the install has experience with the BMW EDC systems. The shop that I used, had previously installed different suspension components on different BMWs, so I was comfortable with that
Nice to see a Vegas resident in here! What shops have you gotten quotes from for suspension? Currently looking for a good shop myself. I’m in southwest area.

Hey! Sorry for the delayed reply.

The first shop I was hoping to use because of recommendations was -

Southwest Bimmers, 6065 Hinson St, Las Vegas, NV 89118.

Unfortunately, they were very busy with vehicles already in the shop. And the quote was pretty high. $2,100 for Eibach spring install and a catted downpipe install. ($1,200 for the springs and $800 for the downpipe install) . And they said I would need to leave the car for 2 days.

The other shop I believe was EuroTek Tuning. 6250 Banning Creek Dr, Las Vegas, NV 89118. Same shit - like $1,200 for spring install.

Another forum member in Vegas told me about an aftermarket and wheel and tire shop in Vegas who did his M240i and his brothers M4.
I believe it was $800 out the door for the spring install. So I went with them. However, I just Googled the shop, and it's PERMANENTLY CLOSED , lmfao. So obviously I can't recommend them.

Just make sure whatever shop you go with has experienced with the BMW EDC suspension. Just for peace of mind.

Sheeesh lol. Kinda pricey! Good thing I got some coilovers with an EDC plug and play. So hopefully they come out good!

Yeah , what shops are charging nowadays is pretty outrageous.

Keep us updated with what you end up doing , and what shop you use. I plan to go with the EDC coilovers within the next year, and I really prefer not to spend $1k for the install

Just got done with the coil install! Came out perfect. It feels really good. Better than expected. Since it was plug and play I didn’t worry too much about my EDC. It’s all installed and plugged in. Works perfect. No noises no CEL. I went with my friends shop but he doesn’t really do suspension work at his shop he just used to do a lot of wrenching before he started his detailing business. So I trusted him and it worked out! I will say it was way less than $1k haha.

How long did the install take? Shops are quoting ridiculous pricing so it would be helpful for those going for a shop install to know. Granted I doubt any shop would change their quotes but it’s still good info to know.
