Preparing and taking our G87 M2 on track

We recently optimised our G87 M2 towards track use and wanted to share our feedback after a track session at Brands Hatch.




Modification Summary:
  • Suspension: Moton uniball control arm bushings, Millway adjustable camber plates, hardrace adjustable rear toe arms, MSS Hybrid Height Adjustable Suspension.
  • Brakes: EBC floating discs, EBC Blue Stuff pads, high-temp brake fluid.
  • Tune: AREEVE tuning box (+100bhp)
  • Wheels/Tyres: Flow Formed HRE FF21, Yokohama AD-09 285/30R20 / 305/30R20
  • Alignment: Track / Road hybrid alignment settings.

Track Impressions (Brands Hatch):

The modifications have yielded significant transformation in the M2's track behaviour. Turn-in is sharper, grip is substantially increased, and braking performance is vastly improved in terms of both power and fade resistance. The car feels more planted, communicative, and predictable at the limit, inspiring confidence especially compared to our G80 M3 and F87 M2 we also bought along.

Was that car not optioned with the M Drivers Package, which enables M track mode? Any Gxx M car must have it on track to disable safety systems / auto braking.

Really? You have to buy the Drivers pkg to disable that stuff? I thought that was just for the speed limiter. I thought the regular car had a setting to disable all the safety stuff.

In the US, M Track Mode is only available with the M Drivers package 😡

Yes, but it is my understanding that M Track Mode is only available with the M Drivers Package, which I have so I can’t verify.

Good! Very confusing though. Even some of the BMW M YouTube videos have conflicting information. Maybe it’s geography related.

Maybe others can chime in with their availability of M Track Mode?

The car here is an M2.

And what's different between the M3/M4 is the fact that in the M3/M4 the "drift analyzer" with the 10 modes of traction is an optional thing, I believe. Not in the M2, as it's standard.
Thanks for the clarification. When I bought mine it was hard to find those details or another M2 to validate this. Salesperson also gave me bad info, since they must have been more familiar with the M3/4. Good to know.

Still wondering why the OP’s car was triggering the safety systems. Must not have had Track Mode on.

I don’t think it is related to M Drivers Package or Track Mode or DSC settings. See this thread: https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1953557

I have not experienced this and hope never will, but the maximum negative g the car registered was 1.48, I am currently on PS4S tires. On average during braking I get to 1.25 gs, and I am not sure if the safety systems activated after a threshold.

The car doesn't need the M Drivers Package to have the M Track Mode. The car has all of the same features across the board. M Drivers Package just activates the higher top speed and gives you the M track day.

We did active Track Mode but for some reason the driver assistance systems were remaining on - I think it might have had something to do with the car being on low fuel. Or it could be as you said, I might have selected 'Sport' rather than 'Track' - will need to check back on my footage!

Thanks for the info, makes sense. I’m always worried I’m going to forget to press all the right settings before a session.

The rear side window cam facing the driver was a helpful angle. I hope there's some learnings/coaching from it simply from observing how autoID driver vs. Liam are seated. Liam's got his seating position and posture planted much better in the seat and isn't pulling himself towards the steering wheel with his entire upper back inches away from the seat back.

The safety warnings I hear mixed things about depending on what country someone is from; guess you'll know if it is user error or something else. My USDM G87 2023 really does have everything off in track mode. It turns off the central infotainment screen too - I have to wake it up manually if I want it on.
I'd actually like to have BSM still active for those dive bombers that love to enter the vortex of danger.

Why not 19 inch wheels and 305 (day and night compared to 285) width tires and square setup? That should perform much better. with 20 inch the car sits way too high for track.

Aero details are neat! Nice vid, good job
