Exhaust tones

Hey all!

I just got a 2024 M2, Zandvoort Blue. I was planning on waiting for the 25 M3s but I walked into the dealership and absolutely fell in love. I am loving it so far. I come from all American cars, mostly Camaros, and this is an entirely different experience. I opted for automatic, as all my Camaros were manual, and I kind of got tired of it as fun as it was. There’s too much traffic in my area and it got unbearable.

Anyway, to my question. I have my break in service in 100 mile’s time. I’m already getting the itch to do some work, but I’m very unfamiliar with this platform. I have come across many videos and clips of single midpipes vs equal lenght, x pipes, so on.

I'm planning to do downpipes in the near future. I was lookujg at resonated downpipes. my question is, what causes the least amount of rasp? I'm not a big fan of the raspy sound and would like to keep it minimized as best as possible. Resonated downpipes linked to a single midpipe? or to an equal lenght mid pipe, x pipe of that sort.

thank you in advance for your help. glad to have joined the dark side 😎

Just had a pretty good talk with one of the guys at MAD and this is what I basically got from it.

Catted downpipe - Non resonated single midpipe

Non catted downpipe - Resonated single midpipe

Non catted (fatboy) downpipe is 3.5” vs 3” and gives a deeper tone. So will offset a non catted rasp a little.

Anything other than the single midpipe will have more rasp and that more “exotic” sound.

When you say Catted downpipe - Non resonated single midpipe, do you mean they recommended this combo together?

I looked through my messages again to better clarify.
Stock downpipe use a non resonated mid
Aftermarket downpipe use a resonated mid

Hope that clarifies things up a bit

Not sure where you live but the primary cats are in the downpipes. Make sure you keep them as you might find that you need them for inspection in a few years.

Appreciate your responses! I’ll likely be opting for the resonated single mid pipe then. As I’ll eventually move on to add catless downpipes.
