Hey guys,

was wondering what option for winter wheels and tyres you will go with? (that will actually hit the snow and ice)

Did anyone put any weight in the trunk? Or does the DSC do its job well even without?

My M2 is my daily and i spend a lot of time on the highway where i might hit both ice and snow.

I am getting after market 19” and just getting a set of 19” tires. I wish there were a set of 19” fronts and 20” rears that we could used with the OEM wheels but the rears are hard to find.

My winter plan for Arizona is long sleeve shirts and occasionally jeans and not shorts.

Wheels and tires remain unchanged.

Check with BMW to see what winter tires it sanctions. Then buy a spare set of wheels which will accept the tires.

Or if Tire Rack is available to you, or something like it, see what winter wheel/tire sets are available for the M2.

Best is to have a 2nd set of wheels for the winter tires. It is not advisable to remove/replace tires on a seasonable basis. Once mounted the summer tires need to stay mounted and likewise the winter tires.

Which specific tires is open for discussion. I have no recommendations other than I would urge you to get real snow tires rather than all season tires.

If you live/drive in an area that can require chains consider snow tires that can have chains or cables installed just in case you are required to fit chains to continue.

For other RWD drive cars I put several bags of sand -- 50lbs IIRC -- in the trunk. I put the bags in a large plastic bin/tub in case I had to open a bag to use some sand under the rear tires. I also bought a shackle (two actually) that would fit in the tow eye and let me connect a long towing strap to the car in case I needed my car pulled from a snow bank. The other shackle was to help connect the tow strap to the towing vehicle.

(Of course the sand comes out of the trunk at the end of winter.)

If you have to have your car pulled from a snow bank be sure the pull is straight. Pulling to the side using a tow eye is to be avoided. (There might be something in the owners manual on this.)

I went with Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 in stock dimensions (19"/20"). They did their job perfectly last winter, even in record-breaking snowfall where everyone was advised not to leave their homes. The snow was so deep I was scraping everywhere and didn't even get close to getting stuck. Both MDM and full DSC worked just fine without any trickery or bags of sand

I could not find these tires on Tire Rack. Were they 275 and 285 front and rears?

I have never heard this before, what is the reasoning?

That said my plan is to eventually get forged summer wheels and use the stock cast wheels for winter. I was able to find snow tires for them, but I could probably get away with some good all seasons given my car is more a weekendly then a daily.

I had no issues last year in Michigan, the only issue that I had was my steep gravel driveway when it kind of melted and iced over but even then it was workable, I was more concerned about the random snow piles from plows that were running across the roads. But I went with Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 from BMW and they store my off season tire for $20 a season (roughly 6 months) so even storage isn't an issue. Never had to put sand or weight in the trunk but my daily commute didn't only consisted of 55mph speeds but slightly hilly areas.

I do need to get some spare rims however

You’d have to re-balance them every time and deal with removing the adhesive, tire beads were not made for frequent manipulation, you risk scratching your wheels every time you have tires mounted, it’s just a hassle, the list goes on.

Only benefit seems to be not having to buy a second set of wheels. Can’t argue storage space either because tires take up the same space whether or not they’re mounted on wheels.

KristofX Check the G80/G82 forums in the classifieds section; there are frequently people selling their used winter wheels in that forum. It's good for understanding what sizes will fit and also to see what may be a really good option near you.

Yep, 275/35 R19 and 285/30 R20

They are available in Germany, actually with a star -OE BMW (there is also a normal version)

sottozeros on the OEM rims from united tire. they were NOS dated 2021 but otherwise flawless. think i paid like $100 per tire. worked great for me, highly doubt ill get a third season out of them though.

Are you sure they are 641m wheels? Those don't have the same bolt pattern as the G8X cars as far as I know.

Grabbing them Thursday, so haven't physically seen them yet, but parts advisor in the email said "This is a basic picture of the style 641m wheel that would come with Pirelli Winter Sottozero 3's"

Said they were plug and play for the G87, just need to swap the center caps.

The part # shows as: Rdci Wheel Tire Winter B 000092 - BMW (36-11-5-A4D-827)

Wonder if maybe it's similar to the 641 m and he was just sending me that photo as a reference? I'll update Thursday.

I really want the PA5s. The US Michelin site says they make them in the stock M2 size, but I can’t find anyone that can get them.

These are part numbers for F87 winter wheels. The 5x120 bolt pattern is not compatible with the G87 5x112 bolt pattern. ET is also less than ideal and centrebore is larger, if adapters could be found for the different bolt pattern.

Yeah, its tough. I think I am going to go with affordable aftermarket wheels in 19s and then getting winter tires. The constant google searches looking for stock sized winter tires is getting old.
