So close yet so far. $10k sitting doing nothing for me while I can make $2k at least on that over the 28 or so weeks for individual manufacturing.

Do they just not want people to buy cars or what?
That is completely insane.
In California?
If so,
Him, I'd out and also report him for asking for an illegal deposit.

$10k is outeageous and blatantly illegal in California.

I'm in TN. I ended up finding one the next state over for a $2500 deposit.

Yeah, that would be a pass. Also, some states (AZ for one) have recently sued car dealers for "requiring" dealer add-ons as a condition for purchase.

Hope your $2,500 deposit is refundable.

Didn't pay it. They put the order in then sent me that. Told them I don't want it

My dealer in Arizona didn’t require a down payment, credit card#, or signed contract.

Looking forward to buying another vehicle there.

south florida here, they asked for a 1500 refundable for any reason. when I ordered my x3m40 they took no deposit. at least around here, there is no inventory of any of these so they don't really care if you order and change your mind as it will be sold quickly to the next person lol... they did lock in my rate on the m40i though, 3 months in advance which was nice as it was still climbing at the time

My purchase of an M2 -- already built and on its way to a dealer but was unspoken for -- started with the salesman adding on -- not on his own but at I'm sure the direction of dealership management -- various dealer add ons. Nitro filled tires. Door guards. Some kind of interior treatment. And one or two others I can't recall now but which I did not want.

To each I ended up saying if the dealership required I accept these then it was a *no sale*.

They were all removed.

This dealer didn't care about the sale apparently. The $1500 ceramic coating and other bs add ons was worth more.

FWIW I spoke to my local dealer in Sacramento, CA yesterday and they're charging a $5k refundable deposit to get on the waiting list for a 2025 M2. They already got like 6 or 7 allocations spoken for and currently being built, and 3 people ahead of me in line waiting for an allocation. No markup and each car built to spec.

Well, my experience buying cars over the years is there is always another dealer. One with which I could (and did) do business with.

I put down $2k in April of last year and was still 3rd in queue for a build slot at the dealer. Ended up taking delivery October.

I'd say this depends on dealer and the spec. Most of the orders I do have no deposit as long as it isn't some insane spec that they think they might get stuck with or have a very hard time selling. At the most, it's $1k refundable, in my experience.
