Low speed front end suspension knocking

Just wanted you all to be aware that if you have a knocking noise from front suspension where you can feel a small thump in the steering wheel, it’s the tie rods and they need to be replaced. There is an SIB for it and I’ve included the link below.

Just started happening on MY24 M240i and I had the same thing on my 23 330i M Sport. Once they changed the tie rods out on the 3, the noise never returned. If you are experiencing this, get into your dealer and get them to get the tie rods swapped. The issue is an overtorqued thrust bearing tied to a specific EPS. Good luck all as it’s super annoying and worse when temps get hotter.

I had this issue on my ‘21 G22. They replaced the tie rod. Problem came back after 6 months. Eventually they had to replace the whole EPS rack. That fixed it.

Anyone have a sound clip? I THINK I may have the noise, and I’d like to confirm.

I had a faint knock coming from the front suspension over small imperfections in the road.
I took to the dealer and the mechanic couldn't reproduce the noise.
They replaced the tie rods anyways while referencing the service bulletin above.
The knock sound is fixed

I currently have this issue on my 2023 M240i. In less than a year, the dealer replaced the struts and strut caps once and the tie rods twice. The noise came back a month after the tie rods were replaced for the second time. The car is currently back at the dealer where they are trying to figure out what to do.

Has anyone had any luck pursuing a lemon law claim regarding this issue?
Thanks

They replaced my tie rods and within 2 weeks the faint knock started to slowly come back.Maybe the noise went away temporarily because they lifted the car and the suspension was fully extended?
I'm going to wait a few months before going back to service with the issue. Hoping they have more information on the problem.

Dealer just advised they couldn't hear the noise. The tech recommended that I just wait until it gets "really bad" and then bring it back into the shop... not the solution I was looking for.

My guys first told me don’t worry it’s just in my head lol. After I showed them how to reproduce it, they replaced my shocks and mounts in the front and told me it’s fixed. Its not planning to take it back and ask them toook at the damn SIB and get the tie rods done. Did your sound come back? Or all good?

My dealership didn’t do my M240 yet because they couldn’t reproduce it even though I can get it to happen regularly. The tie rod replacement will work, as my 23 330 M Sport was perfect after they swapped the tie rods. The noise and steering thump when it happens is annoying but it isn’t damaging anything so I’m just going to wait until my next oil change and I’ll push for it again. I think some dealers are reticent to replace the tie rods on 24’s because they aren’t technically included in the SIB but I guarantee it’ll be updated to include 24’s in the future.

It definitely is more prevalent in hotter temps. Most days I don’t notice it. It was significantly worse on my 330i to the point it did it every time I drove the car.

Makes sense. We have have 'usual' summer here right now, 20-30C (68 - 86F) degrees. And it is noisy every time I pickup the car.

I'm dealing with this issue in my 2023 M240. So far the dealer has replaced the tie rods twice and the struts once yet the noise still persists. I'm about to take the vehicle in for repair attempt number 4.

Member kanpan above had similar experience; the dealer eventually replaced the electronic power steering rack.

Seems the tie rods are the cheaper solution but if the factory really over torqued them, the rack could be bad.

The dealer needs to stop wasting your time and check / replace the EPS.

The tie rods didn't fix it in my situation and a month later I took it back in and they replaced the electric power steering unit. (EPS)
That fixed it
