“Off Road Use Only” May Not Protect Tuners From The EPA

It looks like Cobb will have to pay about $35 in fines for every tuning product they have sold in the US that circumvented emission controls: https://www.roadandtrack.com/news/a6...efeat-devices/

Effectively the $2.9m fine will probably be close to their previous profits.

I wonder which tuning company(s) will be targeted next?

Holy cow. This is huge.

They made an example out of COBB.
This will have disastrous effects across the industry. Burger and so many others will be next and will be dumbing down their JB4s etc. I bet a lot of tuning/dyno shops will have to close. Catless DPs may get pulled. Dang. Sad day.

Elections have consequences. The Left destroys everything it touches.

It was the diesel tuners and ‘rolling coal’ idiots that attracted the EPA to look at engine tuners in the first place, Cobb just seem to be a casualty of that.

Because nobody at the EPA knew about catless down pipes and engine tuners outside of the diesel tuning community. Right. Don’t be dumb.

all he is saying is that this started with diesel emission defeat devices and then the EPA probably went "huh, bet this is happening a lot with tuner cars too" and presto, here we are

This has been an ongoing issue for years (not with Cobb but across the tuning community ).

This started in 2014 with the rolling coal clown show, the EPA started handing out fines in 2017 and have continued since then. The rolling coal stuff is up there with highway shut downs for ‘racing’ and people getting run over at car meets levels of stupidity. A group of obnoxious idiots that like to ruin things for everyone else, a tale as old as time.

I know this won’t be a popular opinion, but I see a silver lining here if it forces tuners to get CARB compliance.

Nope, won't have any affect. You see it as a silver lining (if it was)? May check out the i4 forums.

Saw this from Cobb on Reddit:

COBBtuning

3d ago
“Nothing changes with this announcement. As we mentioned, all required changes have been made and have been in place for quite some time. We never offered calibrations for catless configurations and we no longer offer some maps that included support for upgraded (catted) downpipes/j-pipes. Our software updates back in April of 2022 removed the ability to disable certain emissions related DTCs.

Yes, you can update your Accessport firmware. No, it will not render your current map files unusable. No, we will not be implementing anything like that in the future.”

I have a 2020 STi with Cobb Next Gen Flex kit, catted downpipe, FP green turbo, big fuel pump and injectors and bunch of other mods and it’s protuned, kept all emissions in place and it passes inspection.

I think it's also has a silver lining.

My previous N54 335i with Cobb on map 1 was carb compliment. So not all Cobb AP and all maps were in violation.
