To me, I just enjoy driving manuals. My last two cars were GT4’s and I enjoy the G87. Go to rennlist and you will see people complaining about the GT4 shift action as well which makes no sense to me. There is much more to it than just the manual shift action, gear ratios, throttle response, clutch weight and feel, engine sound etc. are all equally important when it comes to the drivetrain as it’s how the whole package feels. Sure you can get a Civic type R which has a great shift action but it’s a 2L turbo with FWD.

I learned to love the shifters in BMWs. I had 2 E46 M3s, 2 E92 M3s all bought new. I have to say the shift feel for the G87 feels more connected than those cars did. I also have owned Mustangs as well as a Porsche 911. The 911 and the Mustang even though it was an MT82D4 did feel better than the new shifter with the G87. That being said I like it, it gets the job done.

At this point I'm just thankful they still offer a manual. At least this is a conversation of "what parts to upgrade" instead of "how to manual swap a G87".

Hmmm we have the same kit. I've experienced 0 of the issues the rogue is notchy, but for me in a good way. I appreciate knowing my shifter is in gear properly vs stock. It never pops out at all. I have 100% confidence in it. I can shift hard on any gear over 2nd with no issue. Same with clutch pretty easy to manage with CDV out.

Maybe you do have an odd one... sorry to hear man.

I owned a F87 manual for 3 years, had a ITS for a while, and drove a friends G87 manual before ordering my '25 M2 auto. There is no comparison between the shifter and more importantly the gear ratios. The ITS is light years better. The manual in the F87 and G87 feels like an afterthought. Shift action sucked, gear ratios were all off.... I like manuals, but not this one. Get the ZF or stick with your FL5

Rogue SS kit makes the 6MT in the G87 just as good as the ITS. I had an ITS.

The BMW 6MT ratios have been mostly the same for ages. If you've owned a BMW you'd know this...

Also, what SS changes gear ratios... like what kind of question is that.

Coming from someone that owned both the ITS and G87 at the same time, ratios in the ITS don't make it any better than the G87. The only issue with the G87 is the 6MTs feel....

Yes, 3rd gear in the G87 is just as epic for fast road overtaking, that has always been a BMW strength from the E46 onwards that we've owned.

Yeah, I don't know what it should be if not this. It's tuned to hit 60 at end of the 2nd gear power curve, and 100 at the end of 3rd. An absolutely super common set of ratios for cars of this type, IMO it would be unusual if it wasn't geared this way. And it matches up just fine with the dyno curves of the S58. G87 is already traction limited in the lower gears, shortening those gears is just gonna make it harder to control.

If ANYTHING, this car needs a 7th gear to make better highway MPH and reduce the ratio of 6th and maybe 5th. But that's not a reasonable ask for a $63K car in this century.

Of course, all of the above is very IMO.

The manual M2 can hit 72mph in 2nd gear.

You are talking about redline. I specifically said end of power curve for a reason.

Edit to clarify: running right up to redline is often not a great idea. You want to be thinking about upshifting as you start to fall off peak power. In that context, 60mph is roughly the practical top speed of 2nd (again, very IMO, YMMV).

legit you might have some sort of defect especially on the points of getting into gear and popping out. its got some positive feedback similar to a subaru (IE it doesnt get "sucked" into gear like a honda) but ive never had it be notchy or difficult.

ive never had these problems but also acknowledge that its a merely OK gearbox. still wouldnt trade it for an auto, i love driving stick, but my old TL type S shits on it

You need a new gearbox if you haven’t modified the shift linkage or something. Popping out of gear is not normal.

I loved my e90 N54 335.
Watch that blower motor harness. You might want to just pull the carpet and look. Buy a new one proactively and change it out.

Anyway I had the ZF. I recently drove a 2023 G80 M3 MT at the dealer and I found the shifting to be about the same as all the MT BMWs that I've owned. Could it be improved? Sure.

In the past I've put in short shifters, delrin bushings, new mounts and weighted selector rods. All gave better feel.
