As the title suggests, I have been having intermittent issues with the rear parcel shelf vibrating/rattling with either very loud music OR under heavy acceleration. It must be a certain frequency causing the rattle, attributing partially to active sound (engine noise pumped in through speakers). Also note: I have HK sound system with bass boosted almost all of the way, so that’s mostly the cause of my issues…
Source of noise: I sat in the back seat with music blasting and the source of the noise is coming from the plastic vent area at the edge of the parcel shelf. The plastic is vibrating against the metal structure underneath. There is also vibration from the FRONT speaker under heavy acceleration, fix linked below from the G20 forums. Solution (FRONT center speaker): https://www.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1652142 Solution (REAR): Taking out the parcel shelf is a pain in the a$s. I have instead decided to chop up a pool noodle and place halves in key locations. This has so far fixed the rattles/vibrations. Here are the steps I took: 1. Fold down rear seats. Climb on top of folded seats and position self in a way to have access to roof of trunk / cargo area. 2. Use the 2 access holes (need small-medium sized hands) to feed pool noodle or foam/filler material. It’s hard to get a good photo, but the key is to insulate underneath the black plastic (all the way towards the back) and the metal underneath. Vibration occurs when the plastic vent comes in contact with metal below, not the glass above. 3. Fold seats back up and test. — This is not a new issue that only affects the G42. G20 users have it, and so do previous gen BMWs. It’s sad BMW still has not fixed it in the production process. Last edited by TJZ67201; 03-22-2023 at 09:28 PM.. |

Oddly enough, I haven't heard a rattle from the parcel shelf or the front speaker. Then again, I haven't really given the car the full beans yet, neither. I also haven't cranked the radio past maybe halfway. Now, I do hear the clunking noise from the rear, but I think that's the suspension noise everyone else is reporting.

Anyways, going to try the pool noodle and felt tape trick tomorrow. Would prefer not to have to take out the C pillars and all the other stuff in the way. Will update OP with my findings. |

Updated OP: Pool noodle fix works! …So far. It’s not elegant, but it’s not visible and is a cheap fix without having to go to the dealer or tear apart the whole rear end.

I can just see it now.... "You hear that rattle? No, of course you don't...because I needed to take a $2 pool noodle, cut it up, and shove it up by the rear window of my $60k car." This is sad. Like, really, really sad. We shouldn't have to resort to things like this.

Looks like I'll be buying a pool noodle soon.
Like others have said, on warm days I'm getting some pretty gnarly rattling from the rear deck correlating mostly to suspension impacts but also to bass if the music is loud. Brings me back to my Accord days. |

Confirming that two pieces of the pool noodle worked. Now I have 2/3rds of one that'll be unused
