Great insights

Thank you all for the input. I will have to test it again with this in mind. I was definitely shifting into 2nd early. I will also try with traction control off. I am not going to track the car so the top end is less important. This sounds like the Cayman GTS 4.0 situation where the engine must spool to be punchy and second gear is long. Thanks for all of the insight!!

I just wanted to add, once you get the feel of the car. Drive the car without any of the nanny aids on. I drive the car frequently with no DSC and traction control set at 0. It changes the way the car feels.

You are welcome. And look, I'm not a snob about it. The S58's power profile isn't for everyone, and that's totally OK.

The B58 is a fine motor, as is the Audi's 5 cylinder. Hell, throw in the Ford Coyote engine, too. Whatever works. You gotta find what makes you happy.

This is yet another reason the 6MT did not impress me with its long 1st n 2nd gears. S58 will bust your balls in the mid-top end. Keeps pulling like a freight-train up top.

The sales guy told me to rev out the manual. I did some rips in 3rd and revved it out. Immediately changed my mind on the car but yes you have to keep the revs high for better response. But this S58 is scary on the top end.

To recap real quick: motors that are punchy down low (N55s, B58s) are great daily driving engines, and let you get away with low-RPM driving. But they typically totally fade on the high end.

Is a problem for expert drivers trying to move a car around a track. You want more top end torque, since you'll be generating more power (because math). And if you are racing you know enough to keep the RPMs up high.

So a motor like the S58 is "tuned high," rather than "tuned low," because it gives you much more track potential. It's by design. It's less "approachable to the masses" but has a higher ceiling.

The PROBLEM is when casual drivers don't know this, and they misuse the motor. It's just tuned to be driven high, not low. Not a deficit, not a bug. It's a feature.

Drive around town at 5000 RPM for a while, and you'll see.

*And for the long time forum goers: No, I will never forgive Throttle House for their absolute garbage take.
Hey I like Throttle House lol

Then the boost comes in as the revs go past 4500 rpm, the exhaust hisses like very angry 3000-pound cat, and whoosh! you rattle the Mustang's windows as you blow by." So, while new tech has largely eliminated huge turbo lag, higher strung manual turbo cars still have a degree of old school 'charm'!

Nothing below 3000 RPM.
The thing about these engines is to make the EPA mileage rating they have almost no low end. The turbos aren't spinning and you have no boost.

Get those RPMs up!

I was wondering what the exact rev limiter is, I have seen examples where they say it revs to 7500, or maybe those were one-off testers.

I love the energy in this thread. I was back and forth about the manual. But then I sent a scheduled text to my CA and got a response saying BMW accepted my custom paint so they probably can't make changes. I said no worries and to keep the manual option.

Agreed it has to be driven hard and high revving. Brings back the old school 90s feel of turbo lag or N/A Honda engines. I'm with it!

Break in is gonna suck!!!

If you are used to that kind of driving, you'll quickly find the G87 is traction-limited, not power-limited, in the lower gears.

There's also the matter of expectations. This is NOT a car you use to dig race from red light to red light, you'll get dusted by any garden variety AWD car or Tesla. Maybe the upcoming AWD G87 will be competitive, but I kinda doubt it? The Dig crown has passed to electric and hybrid AWD, I don't really expect any pure petrol car to compete these days.
I had a 2008 Civic Si that was honestly one of the most fun cars to drive because you could drive it like hell but were still doing the speed limit lmao.
I revved that Honda out to over 8k rpm every single time I drove it. I mean, you had to because there was ZERO power in that car below 5k RPM.
But yeah, this car has a VERY similar feel as to where the peak HP lands in the power band (though it obviously has a ton more torque throughout the entire rev range), and this thing is going to be such a joy to drive in 10 days when my break in service is complete!

I'll get an M3 Comp xDrive someday and use that when I want to take off at stoplights and beat most things lol (I just need an extra 100k, or a few years time so I can keep the M2 as well haha)

This all said, the car is also deceptively quick even at low RPMs. I've been in 6th on the highway and somebody goes to try and "win" because they decided to drive way over the speed limit (looking at you, random TRD package toyota camry's) and if I put my foot all the way down I basically keep up with acceleration of most cars. This car in particular feels much faster from the passenger seat. My 8V RS3 felt crazy fast as both driver and passenger, but like it would rather drive into a wall than take a turn at speed lol.

Simple solution . . . 2 words:

RACE CHIP (or Dinan or Car Bahn, etc. . . . all pretty much the same box).

It TRANSFORMS the car. Simply incredible. Even at modest settings it improves boost below 4,000.

Plus, it's cheap, and very simple to install.

For real. I really like Audis in so many ways, but OMG the nose always just seems so freakin heavy. I thought it was just me and then learned, no, a lot of people feel this way.

I remember playing with some BMW in my heavily modded S4. High speed corners weren't fun lol

Ah, ok then. Be prepared for a 'NO'. Only the 4 pre selected Individual options for the M2 will be available. I tried twice to get Oxford Green Metallic, and twice for Verde Ermes LOL.

Oh I think you misunderstood. I ordered Twilight Purple. I was trying to change from manual to auto. During the process she said the order would be submitted but then BMW has to accept the order for custom colors and that was done this week. She then was saying that any changes to the build now that it's accepted might not happen. I think if it's a standard color then changes can happen easily until locked. Just might be more difficult with the "custom" paint.

Only speaking from my previous B9 S5....when that came out withbthe twin scroll turbo set up, it eliminated the word lag.

Yeah my B9 S4 was an absolute rocket pretty much any time I pressed on the gas, but the understeer is so very obvious vs an M car for sure

Demuro had the best review of the G87 by a lot. And called out the other youtubers pretty well along the way haha
