Prying open the rear view mirror housing
Just got delivery of my 2025 M2. Attempting to pry open the rear view mirror housing for power tapping. No matter how hard I tried, the case just won't budge.
Has anyone successfuly pryed open the housing? If yes, any special tools you used? Any useful tricks you can share? |

If it’s like the m3 housing, Pry tool down the middle works well. Sounds like it is.

I noticed that the seam pattern on the plastic casing in their 2024 car (straight up and down) is different from my 2025 car (s-shaped). I don't know whether that would make a difference though. |

My 2025 opened easily using a plastic pry tool starting at the bottom. It snapped back together easily as well.

I used a plastic pry tool and it definitely broke one of the plastic guides for one of the clips but that did not mess anything up overall. You have to find a pry tool that has a very thin end, and I started at the base of the mirror housing (bottom most area) right behind the mirror itself. You have to twist in the pry tool a little bit then twist it more to get it to separate. If you don't, it'll snap back into place once you remove the tool. I was able to then unplug the power to the mirror (use a finger to hold down the bottom part and lightly use needle nose pliers on the plug) and use my blendmount mirror taps from there.
TLDR you gotta use more elbow grease than you think and it feels like you may break it but it snaps apart. Worst case if you break it a replacement is like 25 bucks on any of these online BMW parts dealers. It probably helps I'm an Asian guy with smaller hands so I could easily get behind the mirror to grab the plug I needed. I saw others got frustrated in different posts and ripped the whole mirror off its windshield mount - I didn't wanna risk making that worse or something lol |

I was checking out the 2025 G87, I did double check the mirror housing and the 2025 model has a built-in camera with the live cockpit pro option. My 2024 with live cockpit does not have that camera.
So I am not completely surprised that they might had changed the housing. I have the 2024 and installed my fitcamx without too much trouble, just push hard with the bundled tool down the middle seam and the housing just "pop". |

Well, I finally managed to pry open the housing, and installed the FitDVR that provides TWO separate outputs. Hence, one can attach a dashcam and radar detector simultaneously.
The housing in the 2025 car is indeed a bit different from the 2024 car. To pry open the plastic case, I started at the bottom and inserted the prying tool at a slight angle. Inserting the tool straight ahead won't work, because the tool will hit againt the rim of one half of the case. I also find the tool that is provided by almost all tapping adaptor manufacturers too thick for the job. It would be much easier if you could get hold of some proper prying tools that are very thin (you can get them easily on Amazon). Quote:

IN cases this helps anyone here are pictures of what the 2024 mirror pieces look like, I suspect the 25 has a similar arrangement and sided-ness of the tabs:
