MAD Intake Installed (PICS & instructions)
Received the MAD intake yesterday from Mike at Extreme Powerhouse. Here's what you get in the box:
- Intake tubes (1 long, 1 short) - high-flow cone air filters (x2) - Heat shields (x2) side-specific - various rubber pieces of different lengths - brackets (x2) side-specific - a bag of hardware - allen screws (x6) - tiny lock washers (x6) - small washers (x6) - small 7mm (?) lock nuts (x4) - 10mm bolts (x8) - washers (x8) - barrel nuts (x4) - 10mm lock nuts (x2) - Parts list & Installation Instructions - j/k! These are not included. Tools you will need: - plastic trim removal tool - flat heat screw driver (long & short) - sockets (15mm, 13mm, 10mm, 8mm, 7mm) - ratchet - wrench (10 mm) 1. Remove rear outermost plastic covers. Turn the plastic tab to "unlock" and lift the pieces off. You will have to unseat a wire on the passenger side. 2. Use the trim removal tool to remove (3) push pins on each side (shown) to expose the top engine bay brace bolt. Move this piece out of the way enough to get to the bolt. 3. Remove front engine bay brace (v-shaped). Outer bolts are 15mm (2 each side), center bolt is 13mm. You will torque these to 28nm when you re-install the brace. 4. Remove air box (each side). Loosen the clamps connecting the air box to the intake tubes. Lift air boxes out. Ensure rubber grommets remain in engine bay (where bottom of air box attaches to engine bay. Should be two rubber grommets on each side. If not there, check bottom of air box. 5. Remove passenger side intake tube. I used a long flathead screw driver to pry the metal compression clip back enough so that I could pull the intake tube off. * if you've driven the vehicle in the previous two hours (or more), the engine cant still be pretty hot. 6. Disconnect wire harness under front of engine cover. 7. Remove push pins (x2) securing long intake tube. 8. Use long flathead screw driver to gently pry metal compression clip on bottom of intake tube (just to the passenger side of the engine. Remove intake tube. 9. Assemble new intake heat shields. Attach rubber pieces as shown in the attached picture (this is the only picture on MAD's website). Attach brackets to the appropriate heat shield (look at picture) using the tiny allen screws (size 3 allen), lock washers, washers, and lock nuts. You will use 2 screws per bracket & have 2 extra screws, lock washers, & washers left over. 10. Install heat shields into engine bay. The 4 barrel nuts will press into the rubber grommets where the original air boxes attached. Use 10mm bolt & washers (2 per side) to secure the heat shields into the barrel nuts. You will then use a 3rd 10mm bolt, washer, & locking nut to secure the heat shields at the front of the car using the bracket you installed on the heat shield. Use a 10mm wrench to hold the lock nut underneath while you tighten the 10mm bolt from the top. 11. Remove metal compression clip & rubber o-ring (inside intake tubes) from the original intake tubes and transfer them to the new intake tubes. Pay attention to their orientation in the original intake tubes and install them the same way. 12. Install new intake tubes. Start with the long tube, then the passenger tube. Have the compression clips inserted into the slits on the intake tubes then press the tube into place. 13. Re-connect wire harness disconnected in step 6. 14. Install air filters into new intake tubes. Use 8mm socket to tighten clamps. 15. Re-install engine bay brace & plastic covers.

The only video online I found skipped more than 1/2 the steps. I've learned from being a professor, even when things should be self-evident, you should still spell them out. This install should take about 20-30 min with these steps above. It took me just over an hour with 1/2 that time searching for instructions/videos and figuring out where all the screws/washers/nuts went. And when there is no parts list & extra parts, you think you missed something somewhere. |

I installed these on my M2 as well. The install was pretty straight forward but instructions would have been nice. I misplaced my gasket pieces (boneheadedly didn't see that they were specific cuts). Had to order more of it from another supplier as MAD didn't keep it in stock. They was helpful in getting me close enough on specifications to find it elsewhere.
The intake sounds fantastic. On my first track day after install a couple guys came up and wanted to know what blow-off valves or modifications I had made to it, |

1. Do you offer replacement filters for this intake setup? 2. What is the care/maintenance schedule/suggestions for the filters? I could go open up the box, but are these wet or dry filters? Thanks!

I believe they are oiled systems, but I would need to double-check with MAD; you can remove the filters and clean them every 1-2 years. no need to replace them.

Great question! 1. Yes, we will have replacement filters on the site and available for purchase very soon. 2. Everyone's situation is different but a good rule of thumb is to clean your filters every 20-30k miles. These are dry filters so no oil is needed. -Tap the filter to remove any loose dirt. - Apply diluted simple green solution or your favorite air filter cleaner brand for dry filter media -Rinse with tap water or a garden hose from the inside out. -Stand the air filter up and let it air dry. -Reinstall

JABCAT Used your guide to install my intakes tonight. Thanks for that. Only complaint was the driver side shield needed some force to get all the contact points for screws in place. Overall pretty happy.

What I didn't like about the fitment of the MAD CAI is how it doesn't fully enclose the air duct. Splits it almost right down the middle.

Got these intakes installed today. They sound freakin awesome. Totally can hear the massive suckage from inside, windows up. Sound great.
I will say some instructions would’ve been nice - I appreciated this thread, a lot. One thing that really needs to be stated is transferring the gaskets from the stock tubes to the MAD tubes - not just the retention clips. If you don’t transfer these gaskets, you’ll absolutely be sucking in hot, unfiltered dirty air because there’s a pretty mean leak without them. The tubes are loose without the gaskets. Install was a bit tedious as it’s all a pretty tight fit. Lots of repositioning things and don’t tighten anything down until everything has been installed correctly. You want things to be sitting where they need to be before tightening all the bolts down.
