This ship sailed a long time ago.
I had the’M’ pkg on my 2010 135i. They’ve been diluting for almost 2 decades. Almost all car manus do it to some degree. JEEP did it when they released the 2WD Compass thing. Audi and Benz did it a long time ago. Can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube on this one. We know the truth, that’s all that matters.

How it started:
///M = Motorsport How it is going: ///M = marketing I never understood the fake "up-badgers". If you put a M badge on a non M car (as a private owner), the people that don't know or don't care about cars won't have a clue. The ones that do know and care will instantly spot the fake. Instant fail and dare I say a way to broadcast your low IQ.

I get asked a lot if the M2 I bought is a “Comp.” “Did you get the Comp?!?”
Um no. That’s not a thing. That was a thing. And then they look/sound disappointed with my purchase, lol.

People ask if my M240ix is better than an M2 and I say, “It's very special, because, if you can see, the number goes to 240, the M2 only goes to 2, it’s 238 more, isn’t it?"

So yeah, when people ask that, I say "it's a Comp, because they just turned the Comp into the base model and dropped the label." |

The "dilution" really started in the early days, when the 1985 E28 M535i was built as an extension of the standard 5-series line and co-existed with the M5 (as opposed to the E12 M535i which was a full ///M model).
So the business model of badging normal models as ///M models existed before the first M3 was launched. |

What would a Comp be? The base car, but with +10HP and costing $6K more? Something like that? Same problem that the 335is had, not enough delta from the base 335i to be interesting to buyers. |

Nah - they’ll sell every single one of them, regardless. That color though… I’m not a purple guy.

They sell every single one because they don't make any unless they receive an order from a dealer. The dealer is the customer. So every single vehicle produced is sold. Now if the dealers can sell every one they order, for the price they want, that's a different story. I've seen plenty of specialty vehicles sit in dealer showrooms with huge ADM for months or years.
