iDrive dial noise

iDrive dial was replaced under warranty for an almost constant rattle. Couple months later, and it's happening again. I've rotated and moved the dial in every position when it's happening to see if there's a bad spot, but the noise never changes. Any thoughts on what's causing the issue?

I think I may have this same issue. It’s either the dial itself or something near the dial buzzing a lot.

That would drive me nuts. The only time I get a similar noise is when my yeti is in the cup holder. Have you tried popping up the console trim & re-seating it? It's very simple to pop up. Maybe also try removing & reinstalling the side pieces as well.

I haven't tried that. Most that I did before taking it to the dealer was pull/ push on every part of the console around the noise, but there was still no change. I remove everything from the console too and unplugged my radar detector.

Swapping the dial did work, but now I'm just curious what the problem is with the dial.

And I thought they replaced the dial by itself, but it looks like the dial is a part of the single component that includes the surrounding buttons. https://www.leebmann24.com/de/en/com...oller-653714#1

My noise is something in that module. Next time I hear it I’ll pinpoint which exact thing. I believe it’s the dial itself.

I noticed randomly on my most recent long drive that I was getting this annoying rattle in this area now (thanks! ). I thought it was my Yeti in the cup holder, but when I removed it the rattle persisted. I found if I pressed back toward the shifter on the front of the carbon fiber trim, the rattle would go away. So, at least in my car, it has something to do with the trim.

I've had a intermittent rattle I've been tracing down basically since new. It sounds like a somewhat metallic ticking, almost like a spring under tension going ping, ping. It is quite subtle, I can't hear it with any reasonable stereo volume, but I hear it between songs. I tried a number of things and I am not sure what the actual culprit is. Things I have tried:

1) Thought it was the cupholder lid. Removed the top cover, added some fabric tape and padding between the Aluminum trim and the actual lid assembly, then put the aluminum trim back on. I don't think that fixed that rattle, but I think it got rid of a ton of little ticks and clicks that I thought were coming from the vents.

2) iDrive knob, I tried pulling it up, moving in all directions. Some days it seemed like it magically fixed the issue, but the last couple times, nothing.

3) The latest - last 2 drives I noticed the rattle, I pulled on the bottom right corner of my iDrive 8 screen. So I put my hand behind the screen on the bottom right side, and pull towards the back of the car. Both times, the rattling stopped. The last time I did it, I kept pulling on the screen for about 30 seconds to a minute. It's been quiet since.

#3 may or may not be the fix, but I haven't heard the noise since. I have a piece of foam padding in my center console that I plan to jam behind the bottom right of the iDrive screen if it starts again, see if that creates a somewhat permanent solution.
