A Bit Of Confusion Regarding The Valve System For Our Exhaust System
More specifically - the dual valve system for aftermarket catback exhausts.
So, simply enough, our factory exhaust has a single valve that opens and closes depending on whether you have the vehicle in Eco, Comfort, Sport etc. , which will allow more or less flow through the exhaust to increase or reduce sound level. However, I see that there are available for sale, a few catback systems that have 2 flow valves. And I also see that they also have available a powered unit for controlling the valves, that are engaged with a remote control. So, once the aftermarket catback is installed , will Eco, Comfort, Sport, etc. no longer control the 2 valves? Or will the controller device with the remote control become the only means of control ? Or do both still work together ? Here is a catback that has the dual valve system : |

So that exhaust specifically looks to have vacuum operated valves. The standard valve on the G42 is electronically actuated, so I expect some sort of device would be required required to generate the vacuum for this exhaust (or you have to pull it from the engine). I believe some exhaust systems with controllers have settings to respect the OEM settings though.
I'm curious how dual valve systems work though, to achieve OEM settings (given OEM is one valve only). I assume the original connector goes through a splitter which then connects into both valves? |

The stock exhaust is closed on comfort and open in wide open throttle, but it does not open all the way (up to 70%)
Customers get a valve controller to open the valves to 100% for more sound. When you get an exhaust with valves, in most cases, those exhausts reuse the stock valve motor so that it will act exactly like stock. You can still use the sports buttons to open the valves, but they only open to 70% without a valve controller, just like the stock system.

I bought the Dahler controller second hand on this forum and it is Gucci. Cleanly mounted inside the trunk by the battery, and the remote is velcroed to the back wall of the compartment where the phone charging pad is. I mostly set the valve to always open and it stays that way until you change it

I actually ordered it and cancelled because someone I know told me the valve unplug would work the same but what you just said makes alot more sense considering I unplugged it and was NOT WOT meaning theres no way its stuck at 100% open rn. the thing I still don't understand is why the aftermarket exhausts don't just include a valve controller that opens 100% AND is able to be controlled by the factory plugs. The whole valve system is already there, electrical wiring etc, seems like it wouldn't be any problem at all to just replace the valve motor with one that opens 100% and be done without having to rewire stuff.

I recall seeing a pic on the forums recently showing the valves open 100% using the fuse pull trick while in sports+. Can someone with a factory exhaust without aftermarket tips confirm the truth for us?

i have not seen that but why would you want to mess with the fuses when you can control the valves for ~$250 with a valve controller

Agreed, if I was worried about having the valve closed for cold start or at night time then I would definitely consider the controller. IMO, the car is quiet enough with the factory exhaust system where you can drive in a neighborhood at night without making noise. |

The question still stands, why is someone not selling a system that utilizes the factory wiring to control 1 or 2 aftermarket valves with the drive modes? Would the computer not like the aftermarket valve and throw a code? Are electronic valves so inferior to the vacuum controlled valves that it’s not worth it? I’m thinking about making a custom valved exhaust for my G20 and I’m weighing my options

Factory exhaust here. Putting the car in sport + opens the flap 100%, then pulling the fuse keeps it open. No error codes on car dash but will throw a code when scanning ODB port. You can put the fuse back in and car will return to stock. Zero cost method to making the car sound a bit better in all modes.
