New owner here, and I'm not sure if it's the same thing or not, but I too get a low clunk sound from the right rear only. I have big speed bumps near me and when I go over them at a moderate speed I hear it, but only when I'm in Comfort mode. If I hit them at the same speed in Sport+ it doesn't happen, what mode are you guys in when it happens?

Ah Jeeeez, just as I sort the funds and decide on the G42 M240i to replace my current F22 M240i I find this thread 😳
I mean is there anyone who doesn’t have this noise/issue? Or is it a given they all have it and possibly some people don’t notice!? Man I’m tempted to jump to the M2 instead (assuming this isnt an issue on them?) but really fancied X-drive this time and it’s such a beautiful car and a complete package, cheap running costs, an all round top notch car… but this noise would drive me nuts. |

My quality takes: My F22 overall "sounded" more well put together on the interior. Assuming what this "thump" noise is, sounds like a bit of rubber-ball-in-a-box noise over bumps, both my F22 and G42 had it. To me it sounds like poorly insulated shock mounts. Where my G42 falls short is all the damn clicks, ticks, and plastic crackling sounds. Shitty plastics everywhere. I fixed a few areas with noises, but others persist. I have a plastic "plap" sound from the back I can't figure out, and the dealer failed to remedy. The F22 only had an occasional tick from the upper part of the center vents, which was fixed per drive by pressing on it once. The F22 developed a "snap" in the passenger A pillar, apparently a common issue, I never got that fixed. The G42 overall feels more substantial. More tech, more options. It rides a lot better than the F22 did, which was more rough and bouncy. If not for the noises in the G42, I think the G42 feels more solid, weight and mass-wise, than the F22. The F22 felt much more sporty, but the G42 cruises way better. Would I do the G42 again? Probably not. But in saying that, if I search all the other potential cars I would have bought, when I Google them with "rattles" after, seems every car I pick has potential for noises. There is one common theme with the cars I drive - they're all sporty. I think it comes down to me needing to choose either something fun to drive with some noises, or buy something not fun to drive that is quiet. I don't think I can get both. I can't afford a Porsche, LOL. Even those have threads of rattles. I'm picky, I'm getting grouchier by the day, I'm critical, I'm anal. I'll hear all the noises in any vehicle. But, the G42 leaves a lot to be desired in that department, for me. It has some moments of being super solid, other times I'd like to drive it off a bridge. So true though, ANY car you look up you’ll find problems and a lot of the time serious issues! Something the M240i has going for it, a bulletproof engine gearbox combo, great reliability other than some misting up headlights and creaks…. And suspension thump. I’ve been lucky with my 21 reg M240i I’ve no suspension noises, although I drive in comfort 80% of the time I’ve not noticed a thump ever. We don’t get Xdrive on the F22 in the UK and I was looking forward to the extra traction the G42 would give me. I’m also gutted you have other interior noises too as that looked like a major upgrade over the F22, looks better quality and so modern! Is there any examples of this noise online, in YouTube videos or similar? I’m still very tempted. There’s just not much to compete in the coupe market, the M2 is the obvious next step but it’s RWD. |

I don't think you'll find anything else new on the market that checks all of the boxes the G42 does. For size, performance, price, drivetrain, etc. It's the last of its kind, I think. For you, I'd recommend driving both a decently used and a new G42. See how it has aged, listen for things that might drive you crazy, then make your choice accordingly. As for thinking getting a M2 might avoid the thump, the stiffer suspension might just exacerbate other noises that don't exist on the G42. There is also the price premium, similar 0-60 (if that matters to you), and a more expensive to maintain vehicle. The G42 with XDrive is a good value proposition. |

Mine does it in all modes and all climates at any speed. If there are bumps, its usually doing it. It might be a little bit worse when cold, and it might be a bit worse in Sport mode. But I definitely have it all the time no matter what. Music does drown it out. I dont often put on music immediately though, usually I am a few minutes into my drive before I start playing anything. So I have a reminder every time I drive it.

You should post. Guaranteed there will be different noises being heard that people think are then same problem.
