Hello,
I’m getting quotes to swap brake pads. Local tuner/race shop said $400, my local guy said 1 hour ($125) but mentioned new sensors. I trust my local guy but can’t answer the sensor question. Will he need me to buy new sensors? Car will have 250 miles on it.

i installed them myself and if careful you do not need new sensors.

i didn’t have a lift or all the proper tools but i can’t see someone getting them all installed in an hour. if i had a lift i would say quickest would be 2 hours. you have the rear ebrake you have to deal with. if they have the program to deactivate and loosen piston it should be faster but that still takes time. took me around 4 hours

i would highly recommend using a decent amount of caliper grease. i am getting noises or brake clunk. most forum members say no noise but i recently spoke to the Isweep dealer and Isweep acknowledges there is an issue and gave them a giant tube of a new grease formula to fix the problem.

With the software to retract the EPB, it takes about the same time to change the rear pads as it does to remove and re-install the rear wheels.

1 hour is reasonable for all brake pads to be changed with a lift, power tools and EPB compatible software.

15 mins a side is really pushing it. that doesn’t include getting the car on the lift. all minimal time but as you count 60 mins, you don’t have much left over. properly greasing the pads, greasing the calipers. minute here and there, re-torquing the bolts. reinstalling new sensor as they recommend. took me couple minutes to get the sensor back in.


if you do go with the local shop i would love to see a video of fast they are working. i can only envision a F1 pitstop event

just doesn’t seem reasonable for an hour especially as the next shop is quoting a lot more time.

Takes about 2 mins to get the car on to my lift, 2 mins to hook-up and boot the NT710 and retract the rear pads, 5 mins to remove the 4 wheels and 10 mins to put them all back on again and torque correctly (star pattern to half torque, star pattern to full torque, followed by circular torque check). This leaves about 40 mins to remove and put back on the 8 nuts/bolts holding the 4 calipers in place and the 4 front pad pins, swap the 2 sensors over, and apply a small amount of lubricant to the relevant surfaces.

With my Caterham at the track without power tools and with a light portable jack, I can swap all the wheels around in 15 mins to even out the tyre wear between track sessions.

Any up-to-date Autel or Foxwell system with the BMW module should be able to do EPB pad retraction. If they don't have one of those or similar devices, they probably shouldn't be working on modern cars.

Sensors (P/N 34356870349 front, 34358095575 rear) are about $30 for OEM BMW ones, but the originals should be reusable if carefully removed from the pads without damaging the spring clip.

You don't need to replace the sensors, and I installed all 4 in my garage in under an hour - no lift. The rear parking brake can be retracted manually with a torx bit, it's really not that difficult.

My plan is to deliver the car to ppf and the tuner right from the dealer. To do the plan, you gotta plan, right?

The real reason I got quotes today is Monday I’m going to ask my dealer to swap the pads and install my skid plate as part of my deal. I needed an idea what it would cost so I can negotiate it properly.
What I’m doing manana is calling a bunch of other dealers looking for an allocation as backup.
Only wildcard is I’m driving a M3 Monday before we sit down, my son2 and my wife both want a tanzanite M3, so we’ll see.

I’ll figure it out by end of summer, hopefully doing my first HPDE early fall. Gotta do shit yourself to keep the costs down right. My goal is to learn brake fluid, pads, oil/filter etc after I have the car for a bit.

You are on the right track planning before you have it!

I changed my pads out to ISweeps just recently with less than 1500 miles and kept the sensors.

Sounds similar to the infamous Soviet Union 5 year plans initiated in the 1920’s.

We all know those results.

Just throwing this out there. But it’s been mentioned the 1500’s are not ideal for track use at all. A few m3 owners who used 1500’s said that they did not do well in track or auto cross events.

I would not use 1500’s for anything but daily driving.
