Mixed up L/R wheel widths

BMW dealer put my 829m winter wheels on wrong today. 9.5" both on the left side and 9" both on the right. They are saying there's no service appointments until next week to fix their mistake, which is lovely. My question is, can this wait? Tires are all identical sizes but my understanding is rolling diameter will be slightly different. Not sure how much of a hurry it is to have them fix this, my assumption is not a huge rush but what do I know. Thanks

Have you gone to your CA (bypassing the service advisor)? He/she is your real contact and should be getting things done for you. If you still get nowhere, go up the chain and to NA if need be (don't know if they will be open Friday).

Talk to management, they should be able to get you in to correct a mistake they made. Biggest concern is clearance of the wheels under suspension compression as well as turning front wheels lock to lock. Sounds like the calipers clear since you can drive it, be thankful of that. If they didn't you would have had a nasty surprise when it rolled away with a huge repair price to go along with it.

If I'm not mistaken, a lot of tires are directional. If they have both backs on one side it likely means the tread on one is rotating backwards, same with both front tires on the other side.

i would not drive this further until fixed. grab a husky jack from home despot and a 1/2 drive ratchet if you dont have one and do it in an hour. ridiculous how incompetent some dealers are.

I have not, I wasn't able to get through to the SA yet (or any SA), messages not returned. First time I called I was told he was on the phone and would call me right back, waited 2 hours and when I called back he had left for the day. If they are open Friday I'll talk to whoever I need to until I get in, CA included.

Debating doing this myself but I'd rather try to let them make it right first.

Luckily they don't rub or anything, I wonder why they are even different widths to begin with. I won't be driving this car today anyway so can wait until tomorrow.

I have the same OEM 829M cold weather package and don't know why the rear widths are 9.5" while the fronts are 9" either. I had the OEM 641M set for my F87 M2 and those were the same square tire setup, but the rear rims were 9" while the front rims were 8.5". Even though the tires are the same size, you can't really rotate them front to back each year. (My new 829M set with Pirelli P Zero winter tires are not directional, so I don't know if they should be rotated left to right.)

For the 641 rims I bought used, the previous owner did rotate them on his M3, according to the paint markings made on the inside edge of the rims. The markings indicate the larger wheels were up front?

A week or two with them mounted wrong shouldn't kill you but agreed that it is annoying when the techs don't pay attention to detail on something so easy to check.

What's stopping you from just swapping the wheels into the correct locations? Do you own a jack & jackstands?

An educated guess would be no.

Probably took more time to post about it on here than just changing the wheels.

Not a chance. You can’t change 4 wheels in 15 seconds.
Even on a Z06.

I don't have a jack or jackstands, so it'd take more time and money to go buy them and do the swap than to have BMW do it.

Look at that. No jack and jackstands.

Go figure. Who'd a thunk it?

That should be an immediate priority and fix at the dealer as it affects the car handling and they screwed up

Lesson learned I guess. Would recommend picking some up so you don't have to rely on incompetent techs nor waste your time going to the dealership for simple things. Hope they get it fixed for you asap.

i would have returned to them immediately and would have demanded to fix it or get a car on their cost until they fixed it...

So in the end I just showed up at the dealer and they swapped the wheels right then. They said there was no marking or indication that the wheels were staggered, so that's why the mistake was made. In any case, all good now. The dealer is storing my summer wheels - they do this for free for 12 months, so when that runs out I may just start doing the swap myself at home.

It's nice to have black wheels for 4 months of the year, switches things up a bit since the summers are the bi-color.

I wonder how many others are running these wheels in the wrong configuration.
