BMW Not starting (please help)

Hello everybody I have a 2020 bmw m850 and I went outside to start it this morning and it sounds like it wants to start but it’s not cranking and I got these codes… I’m guessing I need to replace the starter??? Anybody have these issues before or any other suggestions I should try first before buying a new starter???

Sounds like it wants to start but it's not cranking? What sounds does the engine (car) make then?

And what codes did you get?

If the car's electronics come alive in a normal fashion but the engine does not crank that can be due to several things: A low battery/faulty battery cables/connections; faulty ignition switch; transmission sensor bad -- the engine controller doesn't know the transmission is in P (or N); bad starter solenoid; bad brake switch (the engine controller doesn't recognize the brake is applied); or in the case of a manual equipped car the clutch pedal interlock switch is bad; the keyfob RFID is faulty.

If there is a click when you try to start the engine that can be low battery/bad cabling/connections; bad starter solenoid switch or the solenoid works and moves the starter pinion gear into mesh with the ring gear but the switch that should then be closed to cause the starter to crank doesn't work.

If everything appears normal but the engine cranks and doesn't fire that is often due to a bad fuel pump. Too often -- and I'm guilty of this -- one doesn't really pay attention to what if any sound the fuel pump makes when things work right and thus may not realize the fuel pump is quiet. Also some cars have fuel pumps one can hear while other cars the fuel pump is quieter.

It honestly sounds almost like a grinding noise and won’t crank up I got the codes 216119 “pinion starter : line break starter control (KL50/KL30)”
21B100 “Pinion starter, CC repeat start attempt message activated
24000B “timeout data EWS”
I actually got the car to start after multiple attempts of starting… I took it for a drive it felt like it drove normal it ran good didn’t cut off at all when I got home I shut it up and tried to start back up and it started doing the same thing A very loud grinding noise almost

Grinding noise from a car engine/car is not a good sound. Ever.

Unless you want to are capable of fixing this on your driveway (which (surprise.... NOT) probably will require a new starter) time to get the car to a qualified shop for a professional's diagnosis and repair.

Appreciate the help man I actually fixed the issue over the week I installed downpipes to the car and I made a rookie mistake of taking off a bracket that held the stock catalytic converter on not thinking I needed it anymore and it’s actually what held the starter in place also… appreciate the help though!!!

Good! Glad you got it sorted.

That falls under last thing touched first thing suspect.

Another thing I like to keep in mind with cars: There is always 2 problems, unless there is just 1 or 3 or more...

Hmm, so like the car is one and I'm the other?

Well, yes, but not trying to be mean.

Just if one does anything to a car there's always a chance of doing it wrong or inadvertently affecting something else.

Anyone who has worked on his vehicle and hasn't done this at least once ain't human...

I changed the engine air filter in a car. The top of the filter element had leaves on it. I didn't have access to a vacuum but I was careful in removing the filter element to keep from having any leaves end up in the air box.

I failed. To remove the leaves I made a ball of tape with the sticky side out and reached in with it and moved it about to get all the leaves.

Got some. Thought I got them all. After new engine filter installed and buttoned up but not right away the engine began acting up. Not real bad. But not running right and intermittently.

Long story short I took the car in and the tech checked some things -- like MAF, throttle body -- and found no problems.

What he did find was a leaf or two was up against the plastic mesh just ahead of the MAF. This mesh is there to improve the air flow before it reaches the MAF.

The presence of leaves introduced turbulence in the air flow which affected the MAF. Leaves were removed. Engine was fine.

I copped to the leaves.

No worries, I work in software development and we have a saying that goes back 20 or more years: Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.

I believe the mechanics equivalent is Loose Nut Behind Steering Wheel

I'm having similiar issue on my 2017 g30.
As winter started, anytime it's below 0° i am unable to start the engine, i just hear "click" sound from the starter and it doesn't start spinning. So far I've replaced battery, new starter motor (bosch for new bosch) and went to the dealership for a new software upload. Nothing helped. When i called assistance they loaded diagnostics and this is what came up. As of now it's still freezing and I am unable to even move the car.

I've found recall in us about faulty starters but car was made in austria graz and new starter is also EU made. Any ideas anyone?

Honestly man I’m no any type of expert but from those fault codes it looks like you got more of an electrical issue… or maybe an ecu problem??? Ik the circumstances between these cars are real different but I have a Camaro that was giving me a bunch of electrical fault codes and it ended up being a bad ecu
