8th gear issue
Anyone experience an issue where the auto won't hold 8th gear? It shifts up and stays there for about 15 secs and then drops back to 7th. Car's done about 9k, when searching it looks like there's been issues on the g80/82 and some X's.

Does it do that in all modes? It may be programmed to only stay in 8th in D1.

How fast are you going when the car shifts back down to 7th gear?

We have had 3 ZF8 BMW's and have never experienced this so I'll go with Aramis1919 - Under what driving and transmission loading conditions does this happen?

This is my 3rd with a ZF8 too. Never had a problem with it up until now. It happens in efficient, sport and sport plus, while in road and sport using D1 or D2. Up until now I've been able to get into 8th at around 65-70mph, which it still does but drops back to 7th after a few seconds. Will try some of the options here -https://g80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=2013153

For anyone who develops this issue, it seems to rectify itself over time. In my case just over 700 miles or a few weeks. It fixed itself before I was able to get it into BMW. I'm so glad it has, as the car was barely getting 200 miles out of the tank.

3 months later and mine is back to stuck at 7th gear. I've noticed this time it happened after filling up and doing short runs. It took about 7 weeks, several hundred miles last time to resolve it self, I hope it will be quicker this time around.

It will be the OPF filter doing a regen. Mine did the same when I got it two weeks ago, cruise control on, dropped into 7th, I tried a manual change up, but the box drops straight back down. Once the regen had finished it went back to normal, holding 8th no problem. Watch the mpg when this happens, it falls off a cliff.
Loads on the net about this, particularly in the G80-82 forums. Some have had to go as far as taking it to the stealer for a forced regen. Definitely an issue here in the UK with the OPF filter, not 100% sure you folks over the pond have these fitted. |

On a separate (but related) note, does anyone find the box holds onto 2nd way too long at times, particularly on roundabouts, and even more so when moving between a series of small ones? There have been a few occasions where I've had to manually shift up to 3rd - something I never experienced on my last car which had the B58 and same box. |

100% it holds onto gears longer than the B58 version does, I moved from a 2022 G22 M440i to the G87, and I have noticed that the software in this car seems to have a more hardcore approach to even the "comfort" setting on the ZF8. I've taken to driving in manual mode way more than I did in the last car, part to enjoy the interaction and part to change up earlier when simply tootling around.
Since the 7th gear issue on mine it hasn't happened again, I can only put this down to the car needing to do a regen as it hadn't been driven for a while. |
