First World Problem - Cold Steering Wheel Trim

This is definitely a first world problem, but when using my heated steering wheel my hands still end up very cold as they make contact with the unheated trim piece.

Has anyone figured out a workaround for this

Don’t have a solution for you but did want to comment that in my opinion the heating with the steering wheel is weak.

Have the alcantera wheel, first time so no idea if that effects the heat intensity.

That said I’m a Houston boy living in Dallas so more than soft when it relates to cold weather…

My hands do not touch the trim long enough to be bothered by it. Quick tap of the volume or next track button isnt doing anything. I love the heated steering wheel and how it comes on automatically on cold days along with the heated seats. Granted, my car stays in the garage overnight so my mornings are not bad.

Had same issue the other day. Part of the sw was freezing cold.

Even if I live in LA, need to be more careful to the touch since cold surfaces trigger my Raynaud’s attacks.

Mine lives in the garage as well, but if holding the steering wheel properly at 9:00 & 3:00 the palm area of my thumb rests smack dab on the trim.

Now I could the wheel in a different position, but the thumb indents are there precisely for you to position your hands there

You’re holding the wheel wrong. The thicker parts of the wheel are for the heel of your hand with hands a 10 to 2. Thumbs should run up the edge of the wheel rather than wrap around it so you don’t break them in the event of a crash.

That's not what I learned with NASA Pro Racing or from a work buddy who was an SCCA instructor. I agree with don't wrap your thumbs, but the thicker part is where your thumbs should rest. Not the heel of the hand. You place your hands as if you were going to wrap you thumbs in the indent, but of course you don't actually wrap them.

10 & 2 was what was taught back in the 70's when I learned to drive, but has long since been replaced by 9 & 3.

If the majority of your hands are on the heated leather portion and a small part of your hand rests on the trim then how do your hands end up very cold. The trim might initially feel cold (I tested yesterday to consciously hold the wheel as you describe and confirmed) but in a very short period the heat going to the rest of your hand transfers through your hand to the trim. At 33 degrees outside temp, I found my hand no longer detected any cold at all within about 90 seconds. So basically I’ll give the dealer response and say I can’t replicate your issue. I also don’t see why you’d hold the wheel that way, as 9 and 3 is a position I use the majority of the time and my hands are essentially 100% on the leather covered part of the wheel. Maybe try rotate your hands outward to be around the outside of the wheel more.

I notice this also on our G42. One thing that would help is replacing the aluminum trim with one of the carbon options. Our G83 has the CF trim and you really do not notice this piece as being cold with its lower thermal conductivity.
