Engine Temp Malfunction w/ codes.
Hey all,
So I’m currently tuned with the BM3 Stage 2 OTS (with downpipes). I have the Flex Fuel sensor and decided to put in some ethanol today. Since ethanol boosts octane level, I decided to use my map2 (91) instead of map one which is my typical (ACN91) since I live in California. Anyways- I tossed in ethanol to a little over e30 figuring since all the maps have flex fuel enabled with sensor this would not be an issue. I started hammering the car (it was exquisite) while in map 2 and all of a sudden I get an error temperature message. I check temp and I am at 205 F only (weird right?!). Not sure what happened but I had to pull over because my rpm rev limiter was locked at 4k with errors (limp mode?). Below is a picture of my codes. I reflashed, turned off max cooling and deleted my codes, and changed my map back to ACN91. My thoughts are that even with more octane with the ethanol content, map 2 was just too much for the crappy ACN91 even mixed with e and I had a missfire which maybe prompted a faulty temperature issue. Since reflashing and clearing codes along with map1, no issues at all even when hammering engine. Let me know if you’ve had this issue or know anything about this! I’ll also be emailing BM3 but probably won’t hear back till Monday. No knocking when engine on. If it was a missfire, would that prompt a temperature alert? Couldn’t have been anything harmful as I would feel it still? No leaks either. Posting in /general since not a ton look in other areas. Apologies if this reaches the wrong crowd. Cheers! |

Mapped thermostat stuck open.
Motor too hot. Drive moderately. And you say the coolant temperature was 205F. Those seem at odds with each other. Then there's Vehicle Security Client Security Module internal error. I could believe the problem is controller related. But of course a BMW tech would have the BMW factory OBD2 diagnostics manual to refer to. (I had these for my Boxster and Turbo and they were very helpful.) |

Yeah, max cooling caused the issue it seems after speaking with BM3. In colder temperature it can trigger a false overheating malfunction and cause the car to go into limp mode. I had turn it off and reflashed, clearing codes and it is all good.
Currently running e40 on map2 still and runs excellent. Last edited by Geighty7; 12-15-2024 at 12:45 PM.. |
