Exhaust valve function ?

Does anyone know exactly how and when these exhaust valve open? I have noticed if I run my car in sport plus the valves are always open but I don’t always want to drive in that mode. If you’re driving in sport, do they only open at certain rpm ?? I have a dinan exhaust and I’d like to hear the tones while driving but not always in sport plus.

Get the car up to operating temp, put it in Sport +, make sure the valves are open, then pull the exhaust valve fuse. This will keep them "open" to the factory setting in all modes. I've done this on both my M2 with Dinan x-pipe & MAD exhaust & my wife's X3MC with the MPerformance exhaust.

It’s fuse #203 on 2023-24 MY. Most likely same on 25.

In sports, the valves will open depending on a few factors, including your RPM and speed.
So for example, they would be at 40% if you are at 4000 RPM.
That's why if you force the valves open with a valve controller, you gain a lot of sound without making any changes.

On comfort, the valves are closed.

if you want to hear your exhaust without going to sport, and you still want to keep the ability to close the valves when needed, get a valve controller

They only fully open under wide open throttle and even then it can vary.

If you want full control of your valve grab out valve controller and you can set it anywhere from Fully closed to 25,50%,75,100%.

Does it force the valves open under WOT if you forget to manually open them?

Example: Start the car with valves closed, drive it through the neighborhood as it warms up. Decide to get on it once on the highway and forgot to open the valves. Does it force them open at WOT? Any chance of engine damage if it doesn't?

If you have it set to fully closed 0% that’s what it will stick to.

The air still escapes through the muffler so it’s not a huge deal if you mistakenly go wot. However I wouldn’t do multiple passes or a track day with the valve closed as this will cause extremely high exhaust temps over time.
