Road salt & underbody-corrosion-prevention

Anyone who does a bit of engine-powered boating on salt water is likely familiar with the salt antidote, ‘Salt Away’.

It’s a flushing & rinsing detergent that defeats existing salt & leaves a salt-resistant film on all manner of objects.

I have used it on jetskis and trailers and have found it excellent. It’s biodegradeable and made of all sorts of lovely stuff according to the manufacturer.

I was thinking it would be ideal for wintry-conditions when roads are being salted resulting in underbody corrosion.

My plan is to use an underbody lance to rinse the car with a Salt Away solution, see images.

I wonder has anyone thought about doing this or whether someone already is and whether it’d be unkind to the complex undercarriage of G9x?

Yes, I think car heads have been missing a trick with this and the boaters have kept the benefits to themselves.

It appears to be pretty much everywhere.

Good stores that sell boating equipment likely stock it. We call call those stores ‘Chandlery’ shops but Amazon is certainly an option.

Advise you stick to the ‘Salt Away’ brand. There are a few copy cats that may be amazing but I have no experience of them.

Be sure to buy the ‘kit’ initially… it comes with the doser you’ll need to attach to your garden hose (it won’t handle the jet washer pressures directly).

My plan is to feed my jetwasher via the garden hose with the Salt Away doser inline the feed side. Then hit the undercarriage using the special lance.

Simple enough setup that should deliver a corrosion-free car for the long run.

I treated mine this evening. Took about 30mins to sort the hoses to put Salt Away through the pressure washer but easy to repeat now.
Can’t hurt.

Well I’ll be damned, I’ve been looking for something like this in the north east of America as when they plaster salt on the roads, it’s one of the few times I drive the beater vehicle to avoid the salt corrosion.

The sprayer on wheels Is a win in terms of application of the product. Will look to pick one up and keep us posted on the results

Lol, thanks for chiming-in, the thread has garnered much interest… I thought perhaps my OCD had gotten the better of me!

In terms of posting results, it’s going to be a long time before the effort can be proven to bear fruit. We don’t get really bad winters in Ireland so it’s only occasionally the councils send the gritters out.

I’m working off the basis that salt is bad for cars and Salt Away is a proven, harmless product. It worked great on my boats.

In all reality, I’m doing this for future owners and corrosion won’t be an issue for a pre-purchase inspection.

By the way, I also used the regular lance to hit the wheels /brakes with a gentle mist of Salt Away solution.

Let me know how you get on too and I’ll post any further updates here.

I bought one by Ryobi from Home Depot many years ago. It works so long as your pressure washer wand is long enough to reach the middle of the car. Mine wasn't so I had to buy an extended wand.

Anyhow, it does the job. On amazon now.

Any negative impact of Salt Away on the paint?
Does it require to be rinsed?

Ordered one but until the temp gets above freezing won't be using it for undercarriage wash, only hand held air pressure pump (think garden sprayer) for washing off the white salt off the body and bumpers.

I started using Salt Away on Jetskis in 2012. The gelcoats were painted and I never had any negative results.
It was great for preventing salt corrosion or, at least, I didn’t get any on the new ski I treated from Day 1 which was used exclusively in salt water.

It’s made in America and the mnfr. claims it’s a completely benign formulation. They list an endless range of applications including automotive.

They further claim that leaving it on is best as it leaves a ‘film’ which inhibits future salt attack & rinsing off is only required in limited cases.

I honestly don’t believe it’ll hurt the vehicle.

With all that said, I’m tending to keep my G90 off the road when there’s bad weather and/or salt-spreaders are active.

I'm headed to my local touchless car wash, right after work to get the nasty salt off my F85 X5M.
I have been really good at keeping the salt off, but with the temperature so low these last 10 days or so, my car wash has been closed with temps in the 20's.
The F80 M3 and W211 E63 AMG have been tucked away in the garage away from all this salt.

Its still below freezing in DMV - once you drive off the cold air will freeze any remaining water in places it did not completely blow dry in the carwash.

Yes, I'm aware of the temperatures. But it so happens that the car wash lane was closed, so no washing my vehicle today, might have to wait until the weekend.

Nice carpark… if you lived in Ireland you’d have to pay the State €7,200 each and every year to have the privilege to drive the three of those on public roads. Not very petrolhead friendly here! 🙈

I’m not used to dealing with such low temperatures on a regular basis.
I’m gathering from the comments that washing a car in well-below-freezing temps is a bad idea, why is this?

Any residual water left in joints after washing that doesn't dry will freeze and expand....and therefore has a *potential to cause damage.
