Rear Axle Differential Lock Malfunctioning

Started the car this afternoon and got the below error code.

Just completed break-in service a few weeks ago and only at 1,500 miles.

Will update after my service appointment on Monday.

Awaiting what BMW wants them to do next.

Meanwhile, loaner is an X3. I miss the M2 already!

Latest update (car turned in 19 Dec):

Dealership requesting to replace the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) Unit under warranty based on their diagnostics.

Awaiting approval from BMW NA to effect repair under warranty.

Hoping to have her back Thurs or Fri.

Will let everyone know what the final outcome is.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas with their M2s; the X3 experience (loaner) has only validated my M2 purchase.

BMW NA came back stating new differential now…

10 days later, with the Christmas holiday, but glad to know we can get some progress.

Warranty replacement of "major" components can take time. Had to wait several weeks when Porsche decided to replace under warranty rather than have a dealer tech repair/rebuild the car's 6-speed manual transmission. (Selector shaft seal leaking.) I was told the new transmission had to be shipped from Germany. Fortunately it was air shipped. New transmission was installed and it proved to be tons better than the transmission it replaced. Clearly the original transmission had issues that extended beyond just a leaking selector shaft seal.

I legit just got this after I dropped mine off for PPF today… 400miles and I’m a bit upset but the error isn’t present on the dash or the app anymore but I still got an email and a text. I made an appointment for next week after I get it back from PPF.

A bit worried about it but it’s gonna be ok 👍

Oil level was okay. ISTA test found multiple no voltage supply faults; no power to DSC module. All of the pin tests came back SAT though so this was an odd one.

They replaced the differential motor and module.

Car is back, picked her up today.

Case closed for me but hopefully nobody else runs into this issue!

I got this warning today; car wasn't warmed up and I let the clutch out a little too quickly and this popped up.

By the time I got to my destination it had turned off (didn't cycle the ignition or anything)

I called my service advisor since the car JUST got it's break in service done a little over a week ago, still only have 1250 miles on the damn thing. Advised to keep an eye on it and look out for any weird/different driving behavior and if it comes back to schedule an appointment..

Wanted to contribute to this thread in case it's helpful. Around 7,000 miles my car started intermittently displaying this error. I ignored it as it mostly goes away with some driving and it never came up while doing performance driving at the track or skidpad.

It started appearing more frequently after 8,000 miles and I took it in. After first thinking a software update would solve it - it did not - the dealer was asked to replace the actuator unit itself. I just got the car back and will see if the error or any related issue comes up again. I was informed if the error returns then a new differential is required.

Air shipping a transmission can’t be cheap!

Quite a few reports of this. Are these 2024 or 2025 model years? I wonder if BMW will do some sort of recall?

OP here; mine is a 2024 model.

Have not had any other issues since the warranty replacement. Just over 9,000 miles now.

Case study of one, but rear axle differential lock can be the trouble message for any number of related or unrelated issues to the rear differential.

My '22 m240 had some engine bay work done that required unplugging the throttle body. The tech either boogered the plug or failed to seat it properly. The plug or socket had troubles with sealing/connecting properly, and when the connection disconnected while driving, the CEL message was for the rear differential lock malfunction, and nothing related to the actual issue with the engine. When the issue was diagnosed, no repairs were made whatsoever to the rear differential or its associated electronics. Eventually the completely replaced the throttle body and its associated connectors, but the trouble code would also be rear differential lock when it was failing.
