Last Monday (Jan 20), a truck driver managed to crash on a roundabout into a well-known F104G Starfighter statue in Peer (Belgium), a plane pointing the direction to the nearby Kleine-Brogel military air base (EBBL featuring F-16 FF, soon replaced by F-35A Lightning II). A couple of 'KeeBee' officers went on site for inspection purposes.

Airbus is shutting down its Beluga oversize cargo aircraft subsidiary. I do not know if another party will attempt to buy the Belugas or not.

Question for smokinjoe64 based on the above picture since you fly G Series:

Gulfstreams don't have leading edge slats? Wouldn't that help in lower the approach speed and maybe access to shorter airfields?

Gulfstream wing design and sweep are superbly efficient for all flight regimes.

Design capabilities/features provide excellent aero smoothness at high & lower speeds without need for leading edge devices, which add complexity and weight.

Since engines offer sensational power, referring to landing speeds at touchdown, thrust reverser use = comfortable, very 'short field' landings.
[of course, dependent upon weight & other factors]

Llarryjus seen' this...WoW this a great find! Pic chock full of very cool, fond memories.

Fortunate enough to have flown this config in 90s. Wish BuNo was visible to reference my ole logbooks.

Most fav platform flown [except for F-16N ] as it was Pure, an absolute 'hot rod'...lightweight, mostly analogue, no nonsense equipment, a stripper delight!

Had most powerful A-4 powerplant (P-408) so acceleration, nimbleness, rate of climb/turn, responsiveness was absolutely 'symbiotic'. In the hands of a shit-hot Scooter driver, common to wax F-14s in 1v1 single circle fights; except in the vertical w/burners; however, several tactics employable to mitigate that advantage as well.

Luv it

The Embraer ERJ series (135/140/145) as well as the CRJ-1/200 don’t have leading edge devices, either. Even at MGLW, the ERJ only need roughly 4000 ft of runway if it was dry 😬

I’ve seen images of P-51 Mustangs sitting on a pedestal at various locations in the world, covered with bird shit and in general decay. Considering the history, value and growing rarity of Mustangs, I consider this sacrilege. Bring’em home!

Well, there were also East Coast adversary scooters at Fallon.

And in addition to A-4Es, there were A-4F 'Super Foxes'.

You're correct...in latter service years were a 'mixed bag' of A-4s configs used in both VFC & VC squadrons [Miramar/Fallon, Hawaii, Guantanamo]:
  • Echo's
  • Foxtrot's
  • Mike's

For Llarry, smokinjoe64 and Lady Jane

30 minutes high-res quality.

Experience F/A-18 Superhornet aircraft carrier aviation aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) out at sea with VFA-154, "The Black Knights", for their 2020-21 deployment. For six months, the crew worked around the clock to defend and protect freedom and navigation of the Western Pacific.
The Black Knights serve as one of four F/A-18 squadrons aboard. The video highlights the different aircrew and sailors that make up this team and some of the details that go into flight operations on a Nimitz-class, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
Video footage taken by LT Taylor “Gary the Snail” Barrett and other members of the Black Knights, with special thanks to Sarah Heinz for providing fly in clips. You are welcome to share this video, just please be sure to give credit. Go Navy!
Shot on: Fujifilm X-T4 with Zhiyun Weebill-S gimbal, GoPro and cell phone.

Congratulations to Boom Supersonic on the first test flight of their XB-1 technology demonstrator to break the speed of sound, making three speed runs up to mach 1.1 over the Mohave a few minutes ago:

It's impressive for a private company for sure, but I'm not 100% convinced it'll be easy to scale up a single-seat demonstrator to an 80-passenger model.

Per their webcast, they already have the factory built in North Carolina and over a hundred orders on the books.

The question for me is if it will be financially viable to operate, which was the downfall of Concorde as the fleet aged. I'm glad that I got to fly on a Speedbird before they were retired, though.....

I don't know but...The Concorde was designed in the early '60S and flew for 21 years. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concorde

With today's advanced technology, it would be possible with backers with deep pockets to revive the supersonic era of commercial travel. Boeing SST never got off the ground for all the wrong reasons.

The "Boom" could be the Wright Brothers' equivalent of what the future could look like. I'm excited.

I think that I remember reading that Boom was working with NASA to make planes with minimal sonic booms by design. That would make their planes more viable for flying supersonic over land, which is something that Concorde wasn't allowed to do.

Don't take me there with the Boeing SST! My neighbor at Chez Vreihen is 7,000+ acres of woodland that used to have houses and businesses before the government condemned it all to make a sonic boom buffer for the failed Boeing SST.....

Remind me again which engines Boom is planning to use for their scaled-up passenger version?

Their own engine design (Symphony), with 3D printed parts. The first full-scale engine core for testing will be completed late this year, and all of the manufacturing facilities have been secured to essentially build one engine per day:
