Is your M240 reliable? Share your story!
I’m on the fence about trading my 2023 X4 for a 2025 M240, but after scrolling through this forum, I’ve come across numerous horror stories about rattles and creaks in the G42. I had to put in a lot of effort to resolve several noises in my X4, and I’d rather not go through that again with a new car. So before pulling the trigger, I’m trying to figure out how common these issues are in the M240—or if I should consider another model, like the M340. I’d appreciate hearing your experiences. Thanks!

I think you can gauge for yourself from the various form threads what the main issues are - headlight condensation and rear suspension noise are probably the main two.
These issues do not affect all cars and is fixable. Keep in mind that those affected will make more noise complaining than those who have had a good experience. It’s a great car - different to a 340 and I doubt you’d have any fewer issues in the latter. |

I am one of the vocal ones complaining about obtrusive interior noises, but I will try to offer some constructive criticism.
Noises that have bothered me: 1. Tinny rattle from the ID8 head unit - seems to be fixed after I manipulated it repeatedly, I must have set something into place. 2. Creaks, cracks and ticks from the rear - I tore apart all of the rear and applied foam padding under the rear parcel shelf vent. Resolved. 3. Plap noises over harsher bumps from the right rear - may be resolved since adding padding to the inner part of the headliner during remediation of #2. Some residual plaps which may now just be the seatbelt bumping into the seat. 4. Clicks, ticks, and cracks from the plastic trim on the dash, around the vents, drink holder cover, and the door handles - partially remedied but still a problem. I removed the ID8 screen, dash trim and vents. Added padding to the interface of the vents to the plastic outer trim, and sprayed some lubricant between the two layers of plastic for the dash trim. Removed the cup holder cover trim and placed padding between the two layers. Still quite a bit of ticks and clicks and cracks, due to expansion and contraction cycles triggered by temperature changes from HVAC. On a scale of 1 to 10 for overall interior quality pertaining to noises considering my 13 vehicles I have owned, before remediation, this car was maybe a 5 out of 10. Since fixing noises, it's about an 8 now, which I can survive with. The underpinning and value factor of this car is undeniable and hard to compete with. There isn't another car that perfectly fits the category of the 2 series for size, performance, and usability. How much of my problems are luck of the draw? Having torn the car apart and evaluating the design, the plastic vent in the back has a strong likelihood of being an issue for those who drive in colder climates (when mine was the worst). The plap issue, luck of the draw I think. The ID8 screen rattles do present themselves in a variety of models equipped with the screen. The residual plastic clicks and ticks are arguably minor and infrequent, but unavoidable in my opinion due the the design and construction of these parts. My particular car is a worse example of interior noise suppression in my opinion. I may have just gotten a worse than average build, compounded with my obsession with these noises. I think if someone were to drive my car before fixing, they would notice some of the noises. Now, I think most would ignore the remaining clicks and ticks. If a quiet ride is something you truly value and cause undue stress, I would honestly say pass on the M240i. In my opinion, the probability of noises is quite high with how the car is designed. Compound the design with a stiffer than average ride, poor roads simply exacerbate the issue. The other issue is if this car is exactly what you're wanting, you're not going to find the package anywhere else. You may need to compromise one way or another. What I have learned personally is to consider not expecting a sports coupe to be a luxury car at this price point. The more reasonable scenario may have been to look for a softer riding higher interior build quality car as a daily, combined with some kind of track based car for spirited driving and track use. I find I rarely put my underrated 382HP to use, so maybe this car was just not the right choice for me. |

2022 M240 here. Purchased new in March ‘22. 30k miles on her now. No problems. No noises. Just got new tires. She’s a great daily. ECO mode is good on gas (30+ MPG). Sport+ is a beast. But I wanted a manual so I bought an M2 (Ordered in July 2022, received in September 2023). Was planning on trading the M240, but I like her so much I decided to keep her. So, it’s M240 for daily and M2 for fun. Both cars have been reliable and rattle free (Have 4K miles on the M2). Oh and the M2 MPG is terrible 😆

Delivered in September 2022 and have driven 35K miles with my only issue being a faulty sunroof motor. The car still runs and looks like new, Id buy it all over again.
I’ve been doing oil changes at 5K intervals with 0w20 LiquiMoly and OEM filters. |

'24 model, August '23 build.
Only 4300 miles, but no issues. I'm sympathetic to the post above about rattles, etc., as I had a lot of that with my 2 previous MINIs. So I am sensitive to that as well. But fortunately free of any rattles and other "build quality" issues so far. |

I've had my BMW M240i x-drive since 2022. My sample is very solid. No annoying rattles. I've had some new cars where the rattles were intrusive (old Mustang GT and Infinity G37) come to mind. My 2019 BMW 330 x-dive was also very solid with one exception, the dash speaker cover rattled. That was a well-known issue that could be fixed.
In the three-years that I've owned my M240, the only issue I've had is that about 5-months after picking up the car the battery went dead. Obviously, a defective battery. It was replaced at no charge. I'm pretty sure that BMW does not make the batteries. I really love my M240. And next year, I'll be purchasing another. I guess that endorsement says it all. Bob |

I’ve had my M240i since November of 2022. October build I think. It’s been great! I did have the iDrive 8 rattle behind the driver’s side dash, and the steering wheel creak. Dealer fixed both issues under warranty and no recurring issues with that for months now. I do have the occasional roof creak that I’ve heard others mention. I’ll continue to experiment and see if temperature is a factor, do I hear it if the sunroof is open, etc. Overall, car interior feels like very good build quality, and went from absolutely no rattles at delivery, then developed the somewhat annoying stuff above after a ~ year, and now it’s back to nearly flawless for me again.
Mechanically, there have been absolutely zero issues for me. Very rarely, Remote Start from the My BMW app fails, but I live in an area with very spotty cell reception, so that is just a connectivity/software issue, not the car. I retired the OEM Pirreli Zero’s around 23K miles, and am excited to push on in the new Michelin PS AS I replaced with now that they are broken in! Pirreli’s could have gone longer, but I did want to go through a 3rd winter with them and chance something. I am coming from an F30 340i xDrive (my first Bimmer). That was an incredible car too, and I miss it. It had a passenger A pillar rattle around 45K miles and that was also fixed by the dealer. Rattles are probably inevitable in most cars at some point. As great as the 340i was, the M240 really feels a lot more serious and sporty immediately. I didn’t get to even see one in person or test drive it until taking delivery, but I was really impressed by the difference and the step up. I happily took delivery, but did make sure to walk by my 340 one last time before leaving ![]() I also have cross shopped some other models prior to / after taking delivery (there was not much inventory in 2022 due to the COVID shortages) - Tesla Model 3. I had to just try it. It’s a cool step up in tech, but drivetrain felt weird, acceleration almost made me sick, and that interior quality was clearly a downgrade, talk about rattles …. - Lexus IS 350 AWD. Perhaps you’d do as well/better in the interior quality/rattle category long term, but the car just did not drive remotely as fun/dynamic as the M240 or even my previous 340i. - Golf R. Dealer wouldn’t even let me test drive it …. and was going to mark it up $10K over sticker to basically equal a base M240i MSRP …. complete joke. I sat in the cockpit and would say quality was decent, but that user interface and touch controls were a huge mistake - CLA 35 AMG. Punchy little thing but the 4 cylinder’s powerband was kind of unpredictable. Interior quality was flashy but actual build quality was disappointing and I could hear a nasty rattle in the passenger B pillar I think. - CLA 45 AMG. Definitely felt more on par with M240i in terms of sheer power/acceleration and its 4 cylinder soundtrack is more theatrical (though pumped in). Same complaints on interior quality (though did not hear a rattle in that one). Sound system was not on the same level as the Harman Kardon in the M240i. You 100% should option the HK. I test drove the CLA 45 before ordering my M240, and will admit I was tempted, but now that I have driven both, I’m glad I passed on that one. Would have been $10K more out the door. - Lexus IS 500. I was really excited about this one. Natural V8, Lexus reliability, and interior quality. Definitely way more fun than the IS 35O, but you have to really wring out the RPMs to get any sound or real acceleration out of the engine. I get that for some, that is the charm of a NA engine, but on public roads, you’re limited on what you can do. I got back in the M240i and immediately felt more planted, more sporty, and way faster all through the power band. The IS500 honestly felt way more boaty than I anticipated. These performance cars we enjoy aren’t cheap, and with all factors considered, you want to reaffirm that you made the right decision. With all of the comparisons mentioned above, and for my desired purposes (Best performance for the money, solid build quality overall, great sound, daily use car with enough space for 99% of the trips I take, and generally regarded reliability of the B58) I can confidently say I made the right choice. I think you will too! |

I only ask because i love the car and would like to keep it long term, but racking up miles out of warranty plus impact to resale over time makes me want to replace it sooner than later. I unfortunately drive around 14K miles per year, I project to be at 70K at the 5 year mark. Last edited by MPR; 02-08-2025 at 06:34 PM.. |
