In your experience, how far away will a dealer do a dealer trade?

I’m hoping my guy can find me a car already on the ground with all the nonsense going on. I’m willing to cover the tow/shipping.

Depends on the dealer. I know a dealer that won't even deal with out of out of state customers.

If you find a car you like, contact the dealer directly and ask them.

More of an issue than distance is the dealerships willingness to accept what is being offered and to part with what is wanted. In other words, it's harder to part with high demand models from certain dealerships and the dealership that is trying to make the deal needs to make the offer enticing. These are usually the sticking points that prevent the swap...

That is exactly correct. I had two Dealers try and get me the same car from one dealer. The dealer that had it wasn't budging off msrp They wouldn't give that car up for anything. Geographically they were all

BMW of Austin was so eager to please me that they gave up an M2 allocation to BMW of Temple to get my wife an X1.

I just did a trade of my 2017 M3 for a 2025 M2. Dealership is in Virginia. I’m in Indiana. No problems at all. Pleasant experience. Fair offer and trade negotiated.

Great, did the M2 ship to your dealer on your dime?

I got a $1300 discount. I’d have no issue giving that up to grease a trade. I appreciate your info as I never considered that.

It was $550 each way. Dealer was very reasonable. I talked them into going splitsies. So, I only paid $550 for my new car to here. They covered the shipment of the trade. Both dropoff of new and pickup of trade were done with my choice of location. I chose my home.

Picked one up over the weekend. Dealer did a trade 120 miles away, flatbed shipped at no cost to me. Sales manager said he gave up an m3 allocation for it, quite thankful.

When I bought my GTI back in 2019, I did a trade with a dealer in another state, 4 hours away. Send them photos of the trade, offered a great a price (all for a 9 year old GTI) and the I was in my way. Fully expected the typical lower trade offer game when I arrived, but they took it for a quick test drive and honored the price they gave me over email based on the photos I sent.

Hey offered more than my local VW dealer, had a discount on the model I was buying that the local dealer wouldn’t match, didn’t have a front plate pre drilled, didn’t force add on the blinking center tail light module that was all the rage back then.

10/10, would do it again.

My dealer is battling to keep my deposit. Thought this would be fair to both of us.

If he can't get a car or an allocation, he needs to give back the coin.

My local dealer was cool when they couldn't get an allocation and gave me my cash back so I could get a car from somewhere else.

They know they will get the service business. I've been a service customer for a decade and have bought cars from them along with sending business their way.

The service business is a good angle and my wife is buying a suv next year.
