If the dealer says its fixed, I would drive it and if it blows it blows. If it does blow it will probably be a complete long block to include turbos and related hardware because all this stuff is connected.

Exactly, drive it and if it brakes obviously the dealer was wrong with their diagnosis. It’s a warranty repair regardless. There’s no way BMW will approve the dealer to replace an engine at this stage in the game so go with the flow and everything will come out in the wash as they say.

Owner Update
After about a month of having the car back in my hands and driving it EVERY DAY a variety of distances and in a variety of different driving manners (sporty hard driving, casual cruising, city stop and go, and suburban shopping with starting and restarting) my G87 hasn't blinked. I am both very surprised nothing has popped up and grateful that I've been able to push the car without issue. (The thing absolutely rips)
As for the final dealer "diagnosis", the mechanics ended up chalking this whole endeavor up to "OEM manufacturing error", stating that the most likely explanation is that SOMEHOW this coolant was present during final assembly and managed not to present itself before. The dealership performed all the required pressure testing on the coolant system twice, and performed teardown inspections after the coolant tests and the long distance test drive they conducted. They found nothing. I 100% doubted this diagnosis myself but after a month of smooth driving without issue, they may have been right, but only time will tell. I am planning to also write BMW directly to inquire about this "OEM Manufacturing Error". I am daily driving this car with a set of winter tires on it so I plan to continue to push the car and enjoy it. If there is a minor leak in the coolant system/head gasket or the engine blows then like some other posts mentioned I anticipate it would be a full engine replacement given the car only has 5k miles under warranty. I will continue to update this forum if anything new comes up. |
