Go with moonroof today or wait for carbon?
I know the comparison on roofs has been debated at length but interested in your feedback. I have a chance to get a new M2 now with all the specs I want EXCEPT the carbon roof (has the moon roof). I really prefer the carbon roof but would have to order and wait plus the risk of a price increase with tariffs to get it with the carbon roof. Black sapphire metallic However, I now not having the carbon roof will be a slight regret but it is a bird in the hand with the other one.
What do you all think for those who didn’t do the carbon roof? Do you wish you did and worth the wait and price risk? Thanks! |

I think it depends on a number of factors. I chose the moonroof because I frequently used the moonroof in all my other cars and I live in a place(Texas) where i can use the moonroof most of the year. That being said, the carbon roof looks better and it will lower your center of gravity a minute amount if you track the car. If you aren't going to track the car and you live someplace where the moonroof can be used routinely AND you have routinely used the moonroofs in your other cars...I say take the bird in the hand. However, if you really want the look/cool factor of the carbon roof....then order and take the chance.

I chose the moonroof, what you aren't mentioning is the money saved with the sunroof. If its a must have, wait and don't worry about the tariffs...its not going to happen.

Sure, I like how the carbon roof looks, but I personally didn't think it was worth the extra money...and that's coming from a person who spent some money on carbon fiber pieces elsewhere on the car. I know what I would do in your situation, but ultimately, you know yourself if you're really going to regret not getting the option you want. Tough call. |

Is the moonroof car also BSM? On lighter color M2’s the lack of the carbon roof is more obvious. On a black M2, it blends in. I say go for the moonroof if it’s black.

Had a nice moonroof in the RS3 and never used it (maybe twice) - carbon roof is an M signature

Carbon roof will also add extra couple inches of head space which is really nice if you are tall. Minus 50 pounds and looks. You get a lot of value for the price. For me it's the best feature you can order on an M car.

Appreciate all the thoughts. I'm really on the fence. I prefer the carbon roof but my dealer happened on a dealer trade of the exact spec, except the carbon roof, and it arrives next week. My other choice is to take an allocated slot with a production date of March/April and delivery in May/June assuming all goes well, although I'm not clear how the timeline really works.

From the drivers seat you can't see the roof.
From the drivers seat you will never feel any weight savings. From the drivers seat you can use a sun roof. If you order and wait, that is six months of M2 driving enjoyment you won't get in your life. If you order and wait, the price will go up. |

In other brands I've always preferred a moonroof. I like to crack it a lot of the year, I like the way it looks on the outside when it's tipped up, when it's hot I like windows down and sunroof wide open. But my M2 has a CF roof and it definitely makes it feel more special to me. Not just approaching it and otherwise looking at it, but the darker and more enclosed feeling inside makes it feel sportier and more purpose-built, if that makes sense. Any damn car out there can have a sunroof. Not all can have a CF roof. And, sunroofs are a source of potential rattles and squeaks that you zero out with a CF roof. All of that said, it doesn't make a bit of difference when a bunch of us on the internet tell you. Follow your heart on this one. |

Even if I don't open the roof, having the glass there lets in light & makes the cabin feel less cramped. My other car has a fixed roof & it is dark & sometimes can feel a bit claustrophobic on longer drives.

I hadn't owned a car in over 30 years without a moonroof. It's always a must have for me.
I stressed over not having one if I ordered with the carbon roof. At the end of the day, the car in TR just looked so much better to me with the carbon roof... so I ordered it. And then I stressed that I made the wrong decision... that I was really going to miss it. And here we are more than 6 months later-- zero regrets. Absolutely love the look with the CF roof and have not missed the moonroof at all. Glad I rolled the dice. |

After the test drive, I knew I loved the M2 and the wheels in my head started turning. To get the car now even missing some options (which I never had in any other car before) at a reduced price or continue waiting. It was tough but I passed on the car. I figured I put a deposit down in Feb 2024, got my allocation in November, and am only 3 months from my build. Am I really going to cancel after getting so close? Also my car is a TP with some M Performance part which I could finance with the car where as the Toronto Red car I would have to pay out of pocket. I couldn’t do it. If you have been waiting, I say, stay the course…it will be worth it. Last edited by Ronin76; 02-16-2025 at 10:06 AM.. |

Love the slick top. Sunroof on a small car like this is basically pointless it's behind you and small anyway. Also seems like cars these days still have issues with sunroof drains and leaking sometimes.
Was so happy I could order moonroof delete on my 25 m240 and when I get awd M2 that car will be carbon roof.

I wish there was a no cost option for no moon roof with the metal roof because that’s what I would’ve went with. I bet BMW does it like that because metal roof vs Carbon roof would be even less of a weight savings.
Since the moon roof is standard I do keep the clothe cover open all the time because I like the extra sunlight. |

Another major problem with the sunroof is that the sunroof interior cover in BMW’s isn’t even a completely solid fabric anymore. It still lets some sunlight in the cabin when closed which is very annoying.I hate sunroofs and this feature makes it even worse. The slicktop or carbon fiber roof are a must for this car IMO.

that option is available outside the US. metal vs CF is only about 9lbs. the much talked about CF weight savings is a red herring. the savings comes from not having the sunroof mechanism. no sunroof is a zero cost option in the M3. |

I got the moonroof because I knew I would use it all the time (which I do). Both for extra air in the cabin and to let more light in. Also, I’m 6’1” and have absolutely no issues with headroom. I’ve had cars without moonroofs/sunroofs before and always hated it. It felt claustrophobic. Plus, I’ve never had issues with creaks or leaks.
However, the carbon roof looks the tits. Not just the carbon itself, but the grooves in the roof. But, unless you’re tracking, it’s purely just for looks. No functionality. And it’s $2600 more. And I’m sure an unpopular opinion: the carbon roof on the BSM looks off. With the other colors, the carbon gives some nice contrast, while with the black, the roof looks faded compared to the paint. IMO, the black looks best without the carbon roof. But, my opinions are mine. Long story short, get what you want, not what’s available. Eventually, you’ll have it and you don’t want to regret it.
