Stage 1 road noise reduction - easy DIY
Ok yall, if you haven't seen my other SoundSkins series, I have started a new set for my G87 M2. I am a big fan of Soundskins and their products and have done all many cars in this setup. The short version is road noise sucks, with other cars, tire hiss, weather and more.
This is part 1 of a 2 part series, and also will have a comparison video once done, showing the differences this makes. In my E53 X5, full stage 3 was a -10 decibel change (that's 50% noise reduction) and my F87 was -9db. Road hiss was way down, stereo much much clearer and cleaner, and no real loss of exhaust tone. I couldn't wait to get started on my G87 with this, and it's making a difference already.

Any work on dynamat or similar to deaden the car? (I didn’t watch the video yet)
I did this work professionally for many years. It’s a two-part deal. Deadening the metal, then applying the sound absorbing foam. Both go together. And there’s is never enough stock tar used. But, things can get heavy quick. Worth it to me.

Nice vid, I have somewhat did sound deadening on all my cars but on couple of em the trims started making noise or was never too perfectly fit (refer factory perfect). Could you shed some light in this case? And what other area do you think can be done for even lesser road noise?

My M2 is surprisingly quiet. I drive 3.5-4 hours one way with the cruise set at 84 mph. No issues with road noise. Now my Z06 with full sound deadening is still ~85 decibels. Long trips in the Z can be very tiring due to the noise. The M2 is wonderful.

Nice job, but I'm not sure how I feel about making the car quieter than it already is. Lol. Tire noise is my biggest complaint and I haven't seen a solution for that.

Tire noise can be helped by applying Dynamat or similar + the foam to the inside rear wheel wells and footwell areas. But be prepared for a lot of work and taking a lot of stuff apart.
I do this to every car I own and it’s awesome. Not sure if I’ll need to do it to the M2 as I don’t own one yet. My guess is I probably will.

Its a negligible amount at maybe 1-2 pounds per door. You notice it slightly at first when closing, then after a day or two you never will again.

Not saying you, but people in general on the subject of weight.
So I literally dont understand the concern about weight. The full Soundskins setup probably adds 40lbs or so total weight. I have had folks on the stage 2 thread complain oh man, man I would never do that, adds so much weight, and on and on. Genuine reaction: Sorry, what? If this was a stripped, no interior, no AC or stereo, door cards and carpet gone bare metal RACE car.. then yeah, worry about the 40lbs. I always want to ask.. so you never allow passengers? You never fill the gas tank because of the weight of 6 gallons of gas more? You never put anything anything in the trunk, heaven forbid going to the grocery store. Let me guess.. you dumped your significant other to cut weight in your car?!?! Sigh. Fine.. turn your tune up literally 1lb of boost and more than compensate for the added weight and more. You could cut 500lbs off your car and no one would notice, all in a street car driving in non-compete environments. I literally dont get folks worried about this. The full Soundskins Stage 3 on the X5 added about 50lbs total spread through the whole car and was a dramatic improvement. Its better in the M2 as well. Rant off, NOT pointed at any specific person, but unless you are actually competing, for real prizes, in your car I dont understand this worry.

Totally agree ^^
These aren’t 2,800lb 4 bangers. And even if they were, I’d still give ‘em the treatment.

I mean... if someone was that concerned about the 40-50 pounds, there's always the Antigravity lithium battery that dumps 40lb off the car almost as easily as snapping your fingers.

I'm interested in what vehicles you're comparing it to? I checked the noise level this morning, cruise control set at 84 mph, Dinan non-resonated x-pipe with MAD axle-back exhaust, valves open to the max factory setting, Continental Xtreme Contact DSW 06 tires inflated to 32 psi cold. Decible app was reading between 61 - 68 consistently when I checked it at various points during the 3-hour drive. That's pretty quiet, imo, & stock exhaust with valves closed should be even quieter.
