Canon XSi or 40D? i'm in a dilemma!!!!!! T..T
Hi bros~!! i really need help here~!!!!
i have now decided to purchase a set of DSLR and i am very new to the market. from my understanding through all my friends' experience, it's best to invest money into lens more rather than body. here comes my dilemma, I am about to purchase a canon EF-S 17-55 IS f2.8 USM lens and pair that up with a body. if you are given the chance to choose between the Canon XSi and 40D and the price difference is around $200, is it worth spending the extra $200 for the upgrade seeing that i am pairing it up with a nice lens? please help me here~~~

I have a canon XSI that I got Dec 08, it was my 1st dslr. I like the camera a lot, picture wise it will take the same quality as a 40D. The main difference is the size/build quality is bigger/better on the 40D. I would recommend looking at both in person and getting a feel for the camera. If you think you would be happy with the Xsi then save the $200...

Which one feels better in your hands? I don't have Canons, but a friend was just over with his Nikon D40x, and the thing felt like a McDonald's toy in my hand in comparison to my D300. Of course, he also had the plastic-crap kit lenses, which really didn't impress me at all. Anyhow....
I don't know how many steps apart the Xsi is to the 40D, but you might feel the difference in your hands. For my money, I wouldn't even hesitate to spend the $200 and get the 40D.......

Had a 20D (same size as 40D), currently have an XSi. The XSi has a slightly higher res sensor, but you probably won't notice the difference. The 40D has a somewhat higher continuous shooting rate, but again that may not matter to you.
The important differences: Cost: If money is tight then buy the XSi and use the extra money on more/better lenses. Ergonomics: If you have big hands you may find the XSi uncomfortably small (I prefer the 20/40D, but not by enough to make a big difference). |

i belive there are more user custom programable functions on the 40D. it shoots 6.5 fps opposed to the 3.5 of the xsi. they have the same size crop sensor and i belive both use the same cmos sensor. the new t1i coming out in a few months will have the upgraded sensor that is on the 50D. the 40D just feels ( at least to me ) like its more solid in my hands.
the 17-55 is a great lens for both. its my workhorse lens right now. just make sure to keep a filter on it as some have dust collection issues inside the lens.

40D = Canon I've even read magazine articles where they've screwed it up.

Another factor is that the 40D's layout very similar to the FF cameras (e.g. 5D MK2). That means separate dials for aperture / shutterspeed in manual mode. This makes a huge difference to me.
If you are willing to go with Nikon, take a look at the Nikon D90. A little cheaper than the 40D, but it performs significantly better in low light. |

my opinion is that if you're new and you're not too sure if it's something you can commit to than don't jump the gun and get the high end stuff. if you can't justify your purchase than it will be a waste of money. also, since you're new you should start of with a(n) entry model and work from that.

You should go and hold both of them. For me, the 40D was much much much much better in my hands. The Xti/ Xsi for me was too small.. I'm even thinking about getting a vertical battery grip to make it even bigger. Btw, I'm a 5'11" Korean so my hands arent very big either.
Oh and the 40D shoots faster > |

I guess the only part which i should consider carefully is whether to invest into a good lens or not. the 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM at $1200 CAD, it costs nearly twice as much as a 40D body.

its all about the glass.... shit glass = shit shots. ive spent 3x the cost of my body for just 2 lenses. granted i cant say that if i have a 5D or 1D, but thats another game. always, always, always get the best glass you can afford ably get your hands on the time.

After shooting with my 40D it's hard not to be satisfy with it. I have an XT also and that thing is super tiny in comparison. I have battery grips on both models. I do appreciate the XT however when I just want a super light package to walk around with. The 40D is a completely different beast in term of performance. I have yet to experience the XSi so not sure how it would perform against the 40D. Good Luck man. Either way, be prepare to indulge in a satisfying hobby.
