Big dilemma.. camera upgrade or mod
I love both.
Just until recently, I think I have practiced enough on my entry level Nikon D40x and I am thinking to upgrade to Canon 50D and that would probably run about $2500 after getting the lenses and flashlights and accessories.. (that would also mean I'd have to sell my D40X, which should cover a bit of the $2500 budget. For those who are interested, they are in good condition with a couple lenses + extras, batteries, packs, etc) Now, I also want to mod my car and get the mtech rear and side, which would probably run about $1500 painted/installed. I cannot do both as I can only afford to do 1 of them... Which one to do for this year... camera or mtech... camera or mtech...

Umm... Why switch to Canon? Keep the D40x as a backup and get yourself a D300.

Go BIG, 5D MKII!!! haha. I was in the same shoe as you (still am somewhat). I took the plunge and went for the 40D and a nice L glass. Glad I did too. I've been pretty addicted to photography to say the least. It's a great hobby.
Next up...70-200mm F2.8 IS L or car mods...

well, a friend of mine got himself a 50D, and a couple new lenses and man oh man.. the F2.8 lenes really does make a difference..
D300 is good, but switching because 2 or 3 closest friends who I hang out on photoshooting trips all carry canon and I wanna be able to swap lenses with them from time to time.. lol.. I'll sell my D40x when if I'm upgrading my camera..

Well, I'm predjudiced against spending too much on cosmetic mods. However, OTOH, I've spent around 10-grand on performance mods and fully understand the drive to mod.
I'm a Canon guy, with a 5D MkII, but I generally wouldn't suggest to a Nikon guy to make the switch. You've got a reason that makes some sense to me, so this is one of the few cases where I'd be real supportive of a lateral move between these two great brands. You don't list the planned lenses, but I'd suggest Ls in every case you later want to move up to full frame. The Canon and Nikon FFs cameras really do reveal the slightest weakness in your glass. You seem serious about photography, so matching up with your buddies and sharing lenses and accessories makes sense. (If you do that a lot). So, here's my conclusion. You're serious about photography and you expect to get tangible benefit from the camera switch. OTOH, your car mods seem less tangible to me. (Do you expect to get laid more or anything "important" like that? Let us know, since that might override any practical benefit of a camera switch.) Hence, I say go the camera route. Dave

get a lightly used 40D instead of the 50D (you're only missing the video and a few extra mpx that you'll never end up using anyway). It will also save you about $800 and thats about 1/2 of your way to Mtech right there. |
