It was a dark and cold December. Things were not going well for Santa Claus. Mrs. Claus had filed for divorce claiming Santa never spent the holidays with her. Dasher and Dancer were picketting for better wages and working conditions; they were tired of pulling an old rickety sleigh through cold blizzards without even getting credit for frequent flyer miles. Prancer had the mange. Rudolph had gone back on the sauce and, while this increased the warm glow of his nose, he couldn't seem to fly in a straight path.

To make matter worse, the new holiday labour elves were taking long EggNog breaks and when they did do some modicum of work they produced shoddy toys. Santa didn't like this as it made his operation look bad. Try as he may, he couldn't get the top quality he had come to expect from his workforce.

Even the Internal Revenue Service got in on the act. In the morning mail Santa received notification by registered letter that he was being audited for the past 182 years! This was almost too much for Santa and his blood pressure skyrocketed. He sat down at his desk, popped a couple of Motrins, washed them down with an Alka-Seltzer, all the while wondering if anything else could possibly go wrong this year. About that time an angel came past the door dragging a Christmas tree. He saw Santa sitting there and asked, "Hey, Santa, what do you want me to do with this Christmas tree?"

And that is how angels got on top of Christmas trees.
