DSLR Change
I've been thinking about selling my XSI and upgrading to a 50D or at least a 40D. How different are the controls? I see the scroll wheel but how quick is it to change controls (aperture, shutter speed) on the fly?
I know the 40D has less MPs and it's heavier but is it a "better" camera? My friend has a 40D so I'm going to mess around with it this weekend. The main reason I want to change is that the picture quality seems so much better with the same lens on it (xsi vs. 50D). Once again, this isn't set in stone, I still have a lot more research to do and this is just me thinking out loud. I'm an amateur photog so I don't need (but wish I had) an mkII or at least a 7D I Any thoughts?

The controls are much better suited for adjusting aperture/shutter quickly with the 40/50D. That's probably the biggest change you'll see with the upgrade. I probably wouldn't do it for an image quality bump. you are better off spending the money on L lenses and upgrading to full frame later down the line. You'll see a much bigger jump in IQ by using L lenses.

I would say stick with your Xsi and upgrade your lens. While the focus/metering/exposure algorithm etc are more advanced on a 40/50D, the lens is still what makes the photos. Also, a possible reason that the photos from a 40/50D may seem better (on the LCD or on a monitor?) is that the pixel on the 50D camera LCD is twice the resolution than that of a Xsi. I'd say, keep your Xsi, buy a great lens, and invest in a FF in the future. Personally, I dont think it is worth it to upgrade Xsi to a 50D. If you're to upgrade, get the FF or 7D (just amazing camera and it is basically a 1D with crop sensors. )

I just recently went from an XSi to a 5D and I would say that it's going to take some getting used to the controls. At first I was like "WTF is this??" but then it became second nature. Of course the main reasons for my upgrade was the size (fits better), build quality, better performance at higher ISO, and of course full frame (although this doesn't matter to me too much). If you are only upgrading because of IQ then I would say it's not worth it. Unless it's a fairly big upgrade, you won't notice that much difference in IQ. The camera does make a difference in pictures though (not just lenses). With cameras like 50D you can do microadjustments for the lenses and some other useful features.
